Great Golf at Hyatt Regency Hill Country Resort and Spa
Deep in the heart of Texas, you’ll find a gem of a Texas golf resort at the Hyatt Regency Hill Country Resort and Spa in San Antonio. This beautiful AAA Four-Diamond resort defines the moniker “total destination resort” with 27 holes of championship golf, luxurious spas, a fun-filled water park, award-winning restaurants and much more to keep the whole family entertained. All this fun in the Texas sun takes place around classic ranch style accommodations.
You really will never have to leave the resort’s secluded setting with all its amazing amenities and dining. It’s easy to forget you’re in charming San Antonio with all its amazing attractions. The resort is adjacent to the family entertainment destination of SeaWorld of Texas and a short drive to other top San Antonio attractions such as The Alamo, San Antonio’s River Walk and Six Flags Fiesta Texas theme park.
But for those of us who love golf, the Hyatt Regency Hill Country Resort and Spa offers golfing pleasures at the Hill Country Golf Club. With 27 holes, stunning practice facilities and the challenges of Texas mountain design, you’ll understand why the course was named one of the 10 best new public courses in the US by Golf Magazine upon its opening. The facility also garnered attention as one of the top golf spots in the Conde Nast Traveler Golf Poll.
Award-winning golf course design firm Arthur Hills and Associates took great care to not only take advantage of the rolling terrain they were given to work with in South Central Texas, but also took great care to preserve the natural landscape. The result is three different 9-hole golf courses, each with its own unique character.
From the moment you arrive at the clubhouse, you get the country club treatment. Sharp guides will take care of your every need before you hit one of the three 9-hole courses to start your round. The Oaks, Creeks and Lakes course features rolling meadows, wooded gullies and a layout that challenges both your strength and your mind. Beautiful lakes combine with strategically placed bunkers and grassy hollows to test your game on every hole.
Each nine plays to a par 36 and ranges from 2300 – 3500 yards based on four tee options. Various sets of tees are suitable for players of all skill levels and the course is particularly ‘female friendly’ and has received the prestigious award on Golf for Women magazine’s Top Fairways list. It’s hard to pick a favorite of the trio, so hopefully you’ll get a chance to play around for a few days and experience all three at least once.
The Oaks course plays to 3,438 yards from the black tees and offers a nice balance of hole lengths. As the name suggests, you will have to contend with towering oak trees, so be sure to study the holes from the tee. There are definitely preferred sides of the fairway for how you set up your approach shots on the par 4s. Don’t pull out your driver on the 400 yard par 4s…you’ll have to think your way through all the holes on the resort and a smaller club off the tee may be the right play.
The 420-yard fourth at the Oaks is sure to challenge your strength and accuracy. You’ll need to be long and accurate off the tee to set yourself up for a creek approach to a difficult green. The fifth and eighth may be the easiest par-3 set of the back nine, although a short tee shot from the fifth tee will cost you a creek penalty, so use plenty of clubs. You end your side with a nice downhill par 5 and a birdie opportunity as you get to a huge shared green with the Creeks closing hole.
Another good tip to remember when playing at Hill Country Golf Club is to definitely keep the ball under the hole on your approach shots. Downhill heels aren’t much fun, and unless you’re under a hole, three heels are standard. That’s probably true on most of the course, but it’s even more pronounced in the Texas Hill Country.
In 2005, the resort reconfigured its original 18-hole course to accommodate a new 9-hole course to make the facility a 27-hole course. Many of the new holes are located on the 3,429-yard Creeks Course. This back nine has great character and opportunities to score on the opening two holes before being faced with one of the toughest par 3 holes on the golf course, the 222 yard third. Par is an excellent score on this challenging hole.
You then take on the ‘creeks’ on the Creeks Course starting with the beautiful par 5 fourth, a true three-shot route to the green at 538 yards and water protecting the green. The difficult seven also gets handicap number one, and for good reason. On the left side and in front of the green on this dogleg there is a stream on the left. You’ll finish with an inviting par-5 downhill and the opportunity to hit a big drive off the tee on a high plateau. Water and bunkers protect the massive green, but if you leave it to the left, you can have the green to turn away from on your approach.
The Lakes Course is the longest of the trio, checking in at just over 3,500 yards from the back tees. You’ll face your first backhand test on the long par 4 third. Keep your tee shot left to get an angle on a hard green protected by sand left and a lake long and right. You’ll have fun on the short par 4 fifth, where your best bet is a long iron or hybrid from the tee on the right side of the fairway, so wedge across the creek to a heavily sloped green.
After the easy fifth, four challenging finishing holes await you. The sixth hole is the first of two tough par 5 holes on the Lakes side. The tee has a dangerous lake on the left and a dry creek bed that turns left of the fairway and then right through it. Your second is on a narrow fairway before approaching a well-protected green with water on the right. After a challenging par-4 seven, you play it against the tall trees on the par-5 eighth, with 560 yards of sweeping dogleg to go. Stay right off the tee or you’ll be fighting for the green.
You’ll enjoy golf club equipment and facilities, including golf cart GPS systems offering accurate metrics and handy tips. Before your round you can make yourself comfortable in the changing rooms before warming up on the fantastic practice facility with a beautiful chipping green, large putting green and extensive driving range.
It’s easy to work up an appetite during a round and after the score is posted you should check out the good food and atmosphere in the clubhouse overlooking the course. Cactus Oak Tavern offers typical but tasty American cuisine, including burgers, salads and sandwiches in a casual setting with a TV and pool table. Take the time to visit the pro shop with a great selection of resort golf apparel and equipment.
While golf may be your primary reason for visiting the Hyatt Regency Hill Country Resort and Spa, you should consider why the resort chose to put the word “Spa” in its name. The answer lies in the extraordinary Windflower Hill Country Spa. Located across the resort from the golf facilities, the tranquil spa is a throwback to the late 1800s and early 1900s, including a conventional red barn. Perfect for the golfer after a day in the hot Texas sun, the “Tee Time” package consists of a golf massage and a rejuvenating mini-facial and pedicure.
The spa is reserved for the adults in the family, but don’t think for a moment that there isn’t something for the whole family to do. The resort really has something for everyone and can be as busy or as relaxed as they wish. You will be able to cycle along educational trails (bike and helmet rental is available) or run along clearly marked trails. Since the hotel is a certified Audubon sanctuary, you’ll have the chance to see some of the 100 species of birds that call this place home. Let the kids play in the playground with slides, swings, tetherball and a volleyball set.
But perhaps the most fun is at the centrally located four-acre water park. Swim on an inner tube down the 250m Ramblin’ River or play in the sand on the artificial beach. For fun in the water, you can play water volleyball in the free-form pool. For adults, there’s an adults-only Texas-shaped pool with a waterfall or an adults-only hot tub in its own private grotto.
Hyatt Hill Country Resort – Like many resorts in the Hyatt family, the children’s programs are second to none. Camp Hyatt is an award-winning children’s program that will take great care of your children ages 3-12 while you head to the spa or spa. In the Texas spirit, the camp has supervised activities such as arrowhead hunting, learning to read the stars or indoor crafts. You can also give your kids a relaxing experience at the SPAhhhT Youth Spa with facials, massages, body treatments and nail services for children under 17. Teens will also appreciate the Underground Teen Space, a hangout spot where you can check email, play video games, and grab a smoothie.
With what’s going on outside, it’s no surprise that classic Hill Country accommodations are outstanding. The hotel’s Town Square is located in the heart of the resort and is home to a century-old live oak tree. In the morning, you can sit on Aunt Mary’s shady porch and plan the day’s activities. Inside, the grand lobby tastefully balances the elegance of a world-class resort with the liveliness of a family vacation spot. The 500 rooms surround a picturesque courtyard and a peaceful calm when night falls.
Of course, a world-class resort wouldn’t be complete without excellent dining, and The Hyatt Regency Hill Country Resort does not disappoint. If you’re in the mood for a good cup of Joe, head to Hill Country Coffee & Creamery. Enjoy pastries and juice in comfortable armchairs with Wi-Fi service. For something a little more hearty, head to the Springhouse Cafe, which serves a buffet breakfast. Delicious sandwiches, soups and salads are available for lunch, while for dinner you can enjoy succulent steaks, perfectly prepared pasta and seafood. The Antlers Lounge is Hill Country Hyatt’s signature restaurant, named after a chandelier made from 500 pairs of antlers (all naturally shed). Serving traditional Texas cuisine and enjoying Bison Tenderloin while sitting by a cozy fireplace and tables for your privacy.
If you’re looking for something to do outside of the resort, you’ll have plenty of options, including the 33-acre San Antonio Botanical Garden with its special pink, sacred and authentic Japanese garden. The San Antonio Zoo and Aquarium is home to more than 750 species, including kangaroos, rhinoceroses, and leopards. Go and visit Shamu, Clydesdales, penguins and dolphins at SeaWorld. For great rollercoaster action, head to Six Flags Fiesta Texas for a real adrenaline rush on rides known as The Rattler, Superman Krypton and Poltergeist.
Thanks to the Hyatt E-concierge program, guests can pre-arrange all their activities before leaving home. From the comfort of your computer, log on to http://www.hyatte-concierge.com and you’ll be able to make dining and recreation reservations, as well as tee times, transportation and more. For extra customer service, Hill Country Hyatt participates in the Babies Travel Lite program (www.babiestravellite.com).
