On 19 February 2011, the opening match was played between the two host countries India and Bangladesh, where India put up a great show with batting and getting a good total on the scoreboard. What was supposed to be an easy win soon became a struggle for the Indians as they struggled to contain Bangladesh and somehow win the match. Then India managed to win every match except an unexpected draw with England (who were beaten by not one but two minnows – Bangladesh and Ireland) and a loss to South Africa (who were again beaten by England). India reached the quarter-finals and faced defending world champions Australia. Some lost all hope when the Australian captain suddenly formed to hit a century against India and put together a fighting total. But the Men in Blue for once did an amazing job in fielding, bowling and batting and entered the semi-finals in style… The 2003 final loss was avenged in style and beauty…!

The semi-final match made more headlines and news than anything else because it was between arch-rivals India and Pakistan. Indians went crazy, the whole nation came to a standstill when the match started, it was not just a match, it was a war where both teams were under immense pressure. What else could justify four dropped catches by master blaster Sachin Tendulkar’s Pakistan team, who went on to score 85 runs before his luck ran out. The Indians put up a decent total and did a wonderful job in the field and in-line bowling to restrict Pakistan and win the world cup semi-final against the arch rivals going into the final. For many Indians, it was a moment when the World Cup was already at home and some didn’t care what happened in the final, all they cared about had already been taken care of.

Then came D-Day on April 2, when India came face-to-face with Sri Lanka, the third host country for the final. A match many said was decided, many said the Indians would collapse under pressure and looked lost as Sehwag & Sachin got out in quick succession. But Gambhir & Dhoni played a brilliant innings to ensure that India won the World Cup final in style and brought home the much awaited trophy. The wait was finally over after 28 years!

India had its grandest celebrations on the night of 2nd April when all Indians took to the roads, dancing, shouting, drinking and bursting crackers to show the world that cricket is indeed a religion in India and to most Sachins it is God. ! Hats off to the Indian team for bringing so much happiness into our lives…
