ICC World Cup 2011: India, England, Head To Head In World Cups
Co-hosts India are among the favorites to win the ICC World Cup in 2011. Interestingly, England have also emerged as possible contenders after their T20 World Cup title win earlier this year.
Let’s see how the teams fared against each other in past World Cups. The sides first met at the event in its very first edition in 1975. The match was played at Lords; England won the toss and elected to bat. They amassed 334/5 in 60 overs, on the back of Dennis Amiss’s 137 supported by fifties from Fletcher and Chris Old, in addition to cameos from John James and captain Mike Denness. Fast bowler Chris Old’s fifty highlighted the weakness of the Indian bowling in which Ghavri gave away 83 runs in 11 overs.
India’s response was nothing less than a mockery of the game, thanks to an unfathomable innings of 36 not out in 60 overs from Gavaskar, who took 174 balls to complete his runs. India finished on 132/3 and the margin of defeat of 202 runs was an ODI record for several years. Gavaskar’s innings has fueled debates about the true motivation behind the opener’s innings.
In the 1979 edition, the sides were placed in different groups and did not meet at all as India were eliminated in the group stage. Their next meeting came in 1983, which India eventually won. England won the toss at Old Trafford and elected to bat for just 213. Kapil Dev was the most successful bowler taking three wickets, well assisted by Binny and Amarnath who took two each. India chased down the required runs with more than five overs to spare, with Yashpal Sharma and Sandeep Patil reaching fifties.
India co-hosted another cup with Pakistan, and England and India met in the semi-finals. England were again lucky with the toss and elected to bat. Graham Gooch scored a brilliant hundred as England posted a challenging 254/5 in 50 overs. Maninder Singh, with three wickets, was India’s most successful bowler. In response, India collapsed to 219 all out. Azharuddin top scored for India with 64 runs while Eddie Hemmings took four wickets for England.
The next World Cup meeting between the two teams was in Perth in 1992. England again batted first and scored 236/9 in their 50 overs with Gooch and Smith scoring fifties. India fell short by just nine runs despite an opening stand of 63 runs and a fifty from Ravi Shastri. Dermot Reeve and Botham were among the wickets for England.
The two teams were in different groups in the 1996 cup hosted by the subcontinent, and as England were knocked out in the group stage, they did not meet. Their next cup meeting was in Birmingham in 1999. India batting first managed 232/8 in 50 overs. Dravid top-scored with a fifty and was well supported by several cameos. When England batted, the Indian bowlers were equal to the task and the hosts were bowled out for 169. Ganguly was the top bowler with three wickets; Srinath, Kumble and Mohanty got two each.
The last World Cup meeting between the two sides came in 2003 in Durban. Indian batting first managed 250/9 thanks to fifties from Tendulkar and Dravid. When England batted, Nehra took six wickets to send them to 168 all out – an 82-run victory in which Flintoff’s 64 was England’s only save.
So England and India are tied in three matches in all world cups. With both sides drawn in the same group in the 2011 edition, their next encounter is scheduled to take place on 28 February 2011 at Eden Gardens, Kolkata. Who will win it?
