South Africa 2010 – The 11 Hottest Countries For the Cup

1. Brazil

As always, the Samba Boys of Brazil are pre-tournament favourites, with 2 out of every 5 football fans swearing that Brazil will win the gold cup. Brazil have a very intimidating World Cup pedigree indeed: the only country to have ever participated in all 18 previous editions of the FIFA competition, and with a record of 64 wins, 14 draws and 14 defeats to prove it.

Brazil has won the World Cup a record 5 times and in 1970 Brazil became the first and only country to be allowed by FIFA to retain the 1st FIFA World Cup – the Jules Rimet Trophy – for life.

Brazil are currently ranked number one in the latest FIFA rankings released on May 26, 2010 and their team coach Carlos Caetano Bledorn Verri ”Dunga”, who captained the USA to the 1994 World Cup win, believes Brazil will win the cup in South Africa a record 6 times. The Brazilian team is awash with stars: from Kaka (voted as the best footballer in the world 2007) to Robinho, Maicoma, Kleberson, Nilmar, Luis Fabiano to Lucio, the team is every football coach’s dream team.

2. Spain

Spain is currently the 2nd best footballing country in the world behind the fabled Brazil according to the FIFA rankings of 26 May 2010. They are the current European champions and their football arsenal boasts world class players such as David Villa, Xabi, Cesc Fabregas, Iniesta and Fernando Torres , a deadly striker with a renowned scoring streak.

Spain had a 100% winning record in all 10 of their World Cup qualifying matches. The country has also participated in 12 previous editions of the FIFA tournament, finishing 4th in Brazil in 1950, their best performance to date.

3. Portugal

South Africa 2010 will be Portugal’s 5th appearance at the FIFA World Cup and they are ranked 3rd in the current FIFA rankings. Their best World Cup success was a 3rd place finish in England in 1966, which they achieved with their legendary player, Eusebio named as the best player of the tournament.

The current Portuguese national team has a plethora of stars like Cristiano Ronaldo (2008 World Player of the Year), Pepe and Deco and Portugal are expected to break their perennial World Cup failures this time around.

4. Netherlands (Holland)

Holland reached the World Cup final twice in 1974 and 1978, but lost to Germany and Argentina on both occasions. Like Portugal and Spain, they are also seen as those who can’t win when it matters most.

However, the boys in orange under their new coach Bert Van Marwijk had a good World Cup qualification and are currently the 4th best team in the world.

5. Italy

The Azuris are the defending champions who won Germany 2006 by beating France 5-4 on penalties after a grueling 120 minutes with the scoreline 1-1. They have the second best World Cup record behind Brazil, having qualified for 17 of the 19 editions and winning the World Cup four times (1934, 1938, 1982 and 2006).

The stars in Italy’s formidable squad include Fabio Cannavaro, Buffon, Gilardino and Battuso. Marcello Lippi, the coach of Italy, is confident that the team is the best in the world and will win the 19th edition for the fifth time, breaking Brazil’s record.

Italy is ranked 5th best in the world by FIFA.

6. Germany

Germany has a strong World Cup pedigree, having won the cup three times – 1954, 1974 and 1990 – in 17 World Cup appearances. Famous stars include Miroslav Klose, Pudolski and Phillip Lahm.

Due to injury, they will miss their star midfielder and captain Michael Ballack, who was replaced by the equally talented player Bastian Schweinsteiger.

Germany occupies the 6th position in the FIFA ranking.

7. Argentina

Argentina is currently the 7th best soccer country in the world according to the current FIFA rankings. They are two-time World Cup champions, winning in 1978 and 1986. Argentina is perhaps the most star-studded team in South Africa, especially with the amazing presence of Lionel Messi, the current best footballer in the world.

Messi is also currently Europe’s top scorer with 47 goals in all club competitions. Other stars to watch in Argentina’s football war chest include Diego Milito, Sergio Aguero and Carlos Tevez.

8. England

England is the 8th best footballing country in the world as published by FIFA in its current world rankings dated 26 May 2010.

England have appeared in eleven previous editions of the World Cup, including their debut in Brazil 1950. They won the World Cup in their own backyard in 1966 at Wembley Stadium, their best performance to date.

However, in the South Africa 2010 qualifiers, they won 9 of their matches and scored 34 goals. They are so ready to go all the way to win the big one – the trophy – especially with their line-up of stars like Wayne Rooney, Steven Gerald, Fredrick Lampard and John Terry under the able leadership of Fabio Capello, the team coach.

9. France

Le Bleus, as the French national team is called, have appeared in 12 World Cups, winning on home soil in 1998. Although their qualification to South Africa was difficult (and not thanks to another Thierry Henry “Hand of God” incident, the play-offs with Ireland), have players with World Cup experience and this can only turn the tables for the second time in their South Africa 2010.

France is currently ranked 9th in the world by FIFA.

10. United States of America (US)

The United States also has relatively little chance of a surprise in South Africa 2010. The team topped the North, Central America and Caribbean World Cup qualifying group. The USA were also runners-up at the FIFA Confederations Cup held in South Africa last year and actually led the almighty Brazil 2-0 in the final before Brazil equalized to win 3-2!

South Africa 2010 will be the United States’ 6th consecutive appearance in the tournament, and they are currently ranked 14th in the world.

11. South Africa

South Africa, the host nation, is the best prepared team in Africa for the competition, having played more friendlies than any other African team. They recently beat Denmark 1-0 to add to their growing number of friendly wins.

Only Cameroon (at Italy ’90) and Senegal (at Korea/Japan 2002) have ever reached the quarter-finals of the World Cup – the best achievement by any African side.

In the latest FIFA rankings on 26 May 2010 – the last ranking before the World Cup on 11 June 2010 – South Africa was the only country out of 208 listed countries in the rankings to achieve the highest move of 7 places from 90th position to 83rd position.

This writer picks South Africa – well ahead of Ivory Coast (currently touted as Africa’s World Cup hope and ranked 27th by FIFA), Cameroon (currently 19th in the world), Ghana (currently 32nd in the world), Nigeria (currently 29th in the world) and Algeria (currently 30th in the world) – to at least equal Cameroon and Senegal’s quarter-final record.

Egypt, the king of African football and a record six-time winner of the African Cup of Nations – including the last 3 consecutive editions – unfortunately failed to qualify for South Africa 2010. They lost 0-1 to Algeria in a tense affair. -soggy playoff in Sudan. Egypt are the only African team in the top 15 FIFA rankings and maybe if they had qualified they could have won the cup for Africa for the first time, but that is not the case yet.

So, which of these 11 hottest countries will lift the World Cup on July 11, 2010?

The next and final article on South Africa 2010 by this author will take the bulls by the corner with help 4 P’s for World Cup successPrepair, (team)Ppower, Pfamily tree and Providence – predict the most likely winner of the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa.
