Curtly Ambrose Vs Dennis Lille Vs Wasim Akram

Yes, as the name suggests, this is a three-way matchup to decide the greatest fast bowler the world has ever seen. At the outset, I would like to clarify that if there were no concerns about the length of the article, I would have included a few more pitchers in the list for comparison. These include Michael Holding, Malcolm Marshall, Fred Truman, Alan Donald etc. There are some bowlers who were as good as these three but did not qualify as fast bowlers, such as Richard Hadley. India produced a great fast medium bowler in Kapildev. He said that the only thing he lacked in his repertoire was real tempo. I mean true pace when I say fast bowler, meaning a bowler can consistently bowl over 143 km (90 mph). There’s nothing like real pace to boost your bowling aspirations. The world has seen some good bowlers who were not punchy enough when needed because they lacked the pace to destroy the opposition enough times.

Big Curtly Ambrose was the most powerful fast bowler I ever saw. He could rip the heart out of your batting line-up with an array of arsenal unmatched in the history of cricket. The first impression anyone got when looking at Ambrose for the first time was that the guy means rebound. On the green tops of Kingston he would be at your chin all the time. But it wasn’t always like that with Ambrose. Watch videos from his golden years and you can see a clever bowler varying his length, controlling the amount of bounce to swing the ball in and out to bowl the batsmen. That’s not to say he couldn’t get a rebound. Rest assured, he could bend his back if necessary and the music on his chin could be heard loud and clear. That incredible spell at the WACA against Australia where he took 7 wickets for 1 run just showcases the man’s talent in full glory. Yorkists, in rocking vans, steep leaping knives to feet; everything was visible. He is 6 feet 6 inches tall, which naturally forced the batsman’s mindset to move on the back foot. He would have smartly seen this and changed the way he delivered the ball to a slightly slower swing delivery without bouncing over the top of the stumps and trapping the batsman LBW. But he was lucky to find a patient and smart partner at the other end in Courtney Walsh, who could plug in daily and was a bad customer in his own right. Accurate, unplayable and simply unstoppable in the form of Sir Curtly Ambrose! Every captain’s dream bowler and sheer ability to run through the opposition while defending a small score was a nightmare for the opposition. He seemed to specialize in throwing the opposition out in low-scoring affairs.

Dennis Lille was a tough, mean and aggressive fast bowler. When fast bowling history is made, it will start and end in Lille. An absolutely perfect fast bowler! When you talk about Australian cricket, a discussion of sledging isn’t too far away, and Lille was a three-time Ph.D. in him. This also means several incidents against opponents. The one against Javed Miandad immediately springs to mind and there have been many. In one of his interviews he said that he was ready to die on the pitch to get your wicket. That roughly sums up his approach. Unfortunately, however, he is remembered more for his on-field antics than the few fine displays of fast bowling he produced. For all Australians, winning the Ashes is the primary goal. And England suffered a lot from Lille in that effort. Once they decided to set up a respectable wicket for Australia on their visit to the UK, they thought it would give them a chance against a great bowler supported by an even faster and meaner named Jeff Thompson. But it wasn’t to be, Lille slowed down a bit and concentrated on bowling cutters that went both ways and halved the British batting again by taking fifers in both innings to win the match against Australia. The West Indies team in the 1970s under Clive Lloyd was considered one of the best teams of all time with many great players. But that team suffered a humiliating 1-5 Test series defeat in 1976, playing for the Frank Worrell Trophy. The main vandals were Lille and Thompson. The duo is also considered to be the greatest fast bowling pair of all time. The worst thing about batting was that he could do long spells too and was on you all the time without respite. Caught Marsh bowled Lille was a term coined during this period when the wicketkeeper ably supported the big bowler to achieve victory. There was once a great debate among the British about how to deal with the pair of Lille and Thompson and a famous joke that was doing the rounds at the time. An old woman listening to the discussion asked how England’s batsmen could be traumatized by a woman named Lillian Thompson. At one time, he had to endure many injuries that threatened his career. But thanks to intensive rehabilitation programs, he revived his career and was more determined, if a little slower.

The first time I saw Wasim Akram was in 1985 in Australia in the Benson Hedges Cup, which India won by the way. There was little first-class infrastructure in Pakistan at the time and Pak captains and senior players mostly pulled talented cricketers out of the nets. Javed Miandad chose this lanky, clumsy left arm pacer and my first reaction was, what kind of bowling is this? But one thing that was clear was that he was an unpleasant customer from the batsman’s point of view. Similar to the two devotees discussed above, he was versatile. He could bowl six different balls in an over without changing his expression. He was called the Sultan of Swing. A real master! His yorkers and scoops were not only effective but were delivered with such precision that the clean batsman left the crease with a look of disbelief on his face. How on earth could the van swing so late? This was the time when the world became aware of the reverse swing. Wasim was also the best batsman of the three and was a true all-rounder. He was instrumental in Pakistan’s first World Cup victory in 1992. He literally carried Pakistan’s bowling on his shoulders with injured fast bowling partner Waqar Younus and a past with his prime minister Imran Khan. The short run to the wicket and the sharp bowling did not give the batsmen time to react. To top it all off, the delivery itself was delayed and pedaled at a fast pace. If you didn’t have the technique to face that type of enemy swing bowling, you were pretty much dead, as K Srikant found out on India’s tour of Pakistan in 1989-1990. In my opinion, he was the best One Day International bowler of all time due to his ability to quickly restrict the batting team in the space of a few overs. He took 23 four-wicket hauls in ODI cricket. He also took 4 hat-tricks in international cricket, 2 in Tests and 2 in ODIs. He also has a Test match double hundred to his credit. A stunning talent and one of the greatest bowlers the world has ever seen.

Now for my opinion on who is the greatest fast bowler of them all? In ODIs, I think Wasim Akram is the clear numero uno without competition. In the tests I will ride with Curtly Ambrose and Dennis Lill as the combined number one. I really can’t say which one was better and who I will pick for my team. They played in different eras and were great all round bowlers. One talked a lot and the other a little, that was probably the only clear difference. But he still scares the bowlers! Wasim Akram will be a close third in Tests in my opinion.
