Faithbook – 3 Barriers That Could Be Stopping You From Creating Your Spiritual Legacy

Barrier #1 So maybe I need to think about it

Many people have good intentions to create their spiritual legacy for their grandchildren. The Bible tells us in many places to tell the next generations what God has done for us.

However, procrastination creeps into our lives. Building a spiritual legacy ranks high on the “can wait until later” list. I fully admit that I am a member of the “Procrastination Club” in many cases.

Faithbooking just isn’t a high priority in many people’s daily lives—at least not like cooking, laundry, and doctor’s appointments.

Every day God gives us a special gift. That gift is “time”. Each of us is given 24 hours in a day. Along with this precious gift comes another – the freedom to use our gift in any way we choose.

Don’t like spending time gossiping about your grandchild and showing them pictures? Most of us would do almost anything in the world for our grandchildren. But would you really do anything?

Would you be willing to give up just a little bit of your time (say 24 minutes a day) to invest in your grandchild? That’s less than 2% of your day. In less time than it takes to watch one episode of “Wheel of Fortune,” you can create a spiritual keepsake for your grandchild.

There’s only one way to break through the barrier of procrastination, and it’s simple. The only way to stop procrastinating is to start. The best way to start is to pick a time and go for it!

Do you believe that God is moving in your heart to leave your spiritual legacy for your grandchildren? “Teach your children and grandchildren about what you have seen and heard.” him. 4:9 (MSG)

When do you think is the best time to start? How much time do you think you can invest in your grandchild’s spiritual life each day? 15 minutes? 24 minutes? 45 minutes?

Write down the amount of time you invest daily, or if not daily, on which days? Monday and Wednesday or weekends? Be specific about your intended schedule.

Write your goal. This is my goal: “I will invest at least 15 minutes a day Monday through Friday in a spiritual legacy for my grandchildren.”

Barrier #2, but what steps should I take and when?

Don’t despair! Faithbooking is something best done in baby steps.

So if you’re ready to start investing a few minutes into your grandchild’s spiritual life, I’ll give you three simple actions you can take right now.

* Pray and ask God what He wants you to do. “…if you want to know what God wants you to do, ask him and he will gladly tell you…” James 1:5 (NLT)

* Start browsing photos. If you’re like most of us Faithbookers, we have a lot of photos – some in boxes in our closets and some digitally stored on our computers and phones. But don’t be put off! And don’t be afraid of the task. Please don’t plan to put all your photos in your Faithbook. You will get stuck.

* Decide which of your photos you want to use first. Pour yourself a cup of coffee and enjoy a personal memory. As you look through your pictures, save a few special ones with the intention of placing them in your heritage book.

Barrier #3 I DON’T KNOW what types of supplies and tools I need to get started.

When a non-artist (like me) wants to start a Faithbook, it can be frustrating. You may not know what tools or supplies you need. To make things even more complicated, you don’t need to understand the language of the craft.

So how can you fix this barrier? When you look at your stacks and stacks of photos and realize that there are so many scrapbooking supplies out there, you know you’re immersed in a new area—one that you need help with.

Do not worry! A little practice will go a long way – I know. I have taken several courses for beginners. With each lesson I learned techniques, tips and more language.

* You can often take classes at local scrapbooking or craft stores. Call to see what may be available.

* Sometimes you can find courses online. You can learn a lot about tools and techniques. A great place for this is http://www.Scrapbook.com. You will find courses and a wonderful gallery here.

* Some churches offer Faithbooking courses. With this option, you have to look in your community. Take a few minutes to call the churches in your area to see if they run classes. Also, ask your friends about their churches.
