EPL Team Profile – Blackburn
The club’s formal name is Blackburn Rovers Football Club and it is known by many nicknames, the most popular being Rovers, Blue and Whites and Riversiders.
The team was founded in 1875 and hosts matches at its home ground of Ewood Park in Blackburn, Lancashire, England, which has a capacity of just over 31,000.
The owners are trustees of the 1987 Jack Walker settlement.
The chairman is John Williams, while the club manager is Sam Allardyce.
Blackburn won the Premier League in 1994-95, beating rivals Manchester United to the post, a year after they finished second in the Premiership standings.
Barely four years after winning the championship, the Riversiders were relegated. Three years later they were back.
In two games this season, Rovers have won and lost; they won 1–0 in their opening match against Everton and lost 2–1 to Birmingham City in the second weekend.
Preseason Review:
Blackburn finished 10th in the Premiership last season. They also advanced to the semi-finals of the League Cup.
This relatively good performance will put the weight of expectation on Sam Allardyce.
The transfers were conspicuous by their relative absence from Blackburn HQ.
The blue-whites are made up of the following players:
Robinson, Salgado, Samba, Olsson, Jones, Nelsen, Givet, Kalinic, Dunn, El-Hadji Diouf, Pedersen, Emerton, Bunn, Nzonzi, Hoilett, Andrews, Chimbonda and Mame Diouf.
Their goalkeeper Paul Robinson was called up to represent England in a friendly against Hungary and Blackburn called on Frank Fielding, who had never played for the Ewood Park side, to stand in for him.
Christopher Samba’s generously built all-round ability as a goal-scoring defender must make him Blackburn’s man for every occasion.
Alan Judge has returned from Plymouth Argyle where he has been on loan for the past 18 months. Judge could get a few starts this season if they are not signed.
Manchester United’s Mame Biram Diouf is on loan and is expected to add to his goal tally.
Yildiray Basturk left after an all-too-short spell at Ewood Park after a less-than-impressive outing.
Steven Reid left for West Bromwich Albion.
Blackburn will look to build on last year’s good performance and you can expect some moves from Allardyce to reinforce that determination while the transfer window is still open.
I expect Blackburn to do as well or even better than last year when the dark cloud of possible relegation lifts.
