2007 ICC World Cup Cricket
The Cricket World Cup is a premier one-day international (ODI) cricket tournament organized by cricket’s governing body – the International Cricket Council (ICC). This tournament is held once in four years and the venue of the tournament is decided by the ICC. The ICC Cricket World Cup is the most watched World Cricket Cup tournament and is an event watched by millions of viewers around the world.
The 2007 ICC Cricket World Cup is held in the West Indies. This is the first time in the history of the Cricket World Cup that the tournament is being held in the West Indies. The choice to manage the World Cup in the West Indies was a result of the International Cricket Council’s rotation policy.
A total of sixteen countries are competing for the World Cup this year. All competing cricket teams from around the world were divided into four groups – Group A (Australia, South Africa, Netherlands, Scotland), Group B (Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, India, Bermuda), Group C (New Zealand, Kenya, England, Canada ) Group D (West Indies, Ireland, Pakistan, Zimbabwe). They will play a total of 51 matches before reaching the World Cup finals.
The teams that have now entered the Super 8 stage include Australia, New Zealand, Sri Lanka, West Indies, South Africa, England, Ireland and Bangladesh.
The 2007 ICC Cricket World Cup saw some interesting developments. The Irish cricket team is ranked first, firstly for the draw with Zimbabwe (this is the third time the draw has happened in the Cricket World Cup) and secondly for defeating Pakistan, the result saw the team qualify for the Super 8 stage. Australian batsman Mathew Hayden scored the fastest World Cup hundred from a total of 66 balls in Australia’s match against New Zealand. For the first time in the World Cricket Cup, Bangladesh reached the Super 8 stage by defeating the Indian and Bermuda cricket teams.
When we look at each of the teams that make up the Super 8, we find that they all show a lot of promise, which means exciting matches.
o Australia – This team is the defending World Cricket Cup champion. They have had a few setbacks, with key players Andrew Symonds and Matthew Hayden facing injury problems and fast bowler Brett Lee sidelined through injury. However, their emphatic wins over rivals Scotland, Netherlands and South Africa suggest they are not about to let the cup win go.
o Bangladesh – This is the team that made it to the Super 8 stage to everyone’s surprise. Their coach Dav Whatmore (he was the one who led Sri Lanka to a stunning victory in 1996) brought out the best in the team members. Much is expected from their matches in the tournament.
o England – their strengths are their key players Kevin Pietersen (World No. 1 batsman) and Flintoff (all-rounder).
• However, in the world cup, the team faced defeat against New Zealand and had to fight against Canada. Andrew Flintoff faced disciplinary action for drinking on a night out. They have to show all their skills to win over the team in Super 8.
o Ireland – After their stunning defeat of Pakistan, they are showing great strength and have a long way to go. Their plus points include strong team players and great strategy from Adrian Birrell’s coat.
o New Zealand – This is a team that is highly expected to reach the semi-final stage with strong players, Daniel Vettori’s left-arm corkscrew and good batting.
o South Africa – They easily won against the teams in Group A and sent one clear message – they are clearly strong contenders for the cup. Good batting is their forte; however they still need a good spinner in their team.
o Sri Lanka – They were the 1996 Cricket World Cup champions and they are putting up a strong fight and winning every match. They have a handy squad with batsmen Kumar Sangakkara, skipper Mahela Jayawardene, openers Upul Tharanga and Sanath Jayasuriya, bowler Muttiah Muralitharan
o West Indies – Their opening wins against Pakistan, Zimbabwe and Ireland put them in the lead. As the hosts, they are doing a lot to make the tournament run well and have a number of winning players like Chris Gayle, Lara, Ramnaresh Sarwan and Dwayne Bravo. On this form, they look very likely to head for the semi-finals.
The Super 8 stage of the World Cup begins on Tuesday night between Australia and the West Indies in Antigua and the results will decide the four teams who will play in the semi-finals.
However, for all the fun and excitement on the cricket field, the 2007 ICC Cricket World Cup is overshadowed by the death of Pakistan cricket team coach Bob Woolmer. He was found dead in his hotel room, the day after the team lost to Ireland, and there is some sort of investigation into the matter.
At the end of the entire showdown, there will be only one winner! With the players of the Super 8 stage all set to fight till the end, the global audience waits with bated breath for the winner of the World Cricket Cup match.
