If you’re laughing at my title, you’ll stop laughing on April 2, 2011, when Bangladesh lift the World Cup, I promise.

Did anyone expect Sri Lanka to win in 1996? If you had predicted Sri Lanka to win before this tournament, most people would have laughed at you.

Did you expect Bangladesh to beat India in 2007? If you had predicted India losing to Bangladesh in this edition of the cup, most people would have laughed at you.

So read on and I will convince you how Bangladesh can and will win this World Cup. In the group stage, Shakib Hassan’s team will have to face India, West Indies, South Africa and England for a place in the quarter-finals.

We will win at least two such matches and finish third in the group behind first and second placed South Africa and India. I expect us to easily beat Ireland and the Netherlands, the other two teams in our group.

In the semi-finals, we expect to face South Africa. We will win that match for the following reasons: (a) better knowledge of wickets in the subcontinent and (b) South Africa’s tendency to choke.

Please also consider the following strengths of our team: (1) World class opener Tami Iqbal, (2) World class all-rounder Shakib Hasan, (3) New world class bowler Mortaza.

When we’re in the finals, we’ll have India, who are likely to face and beat Pakistan in the quarter-finals and Australia in the semi-finals. And we will be very happy to beat India in the final and the following factors will help us to do so:

a) the pressure of expectations on India will be huge,

(b) India have won their last two matches in a row at the Wankhede Stadium and the law of averages will work against them,

(c) Bangladesh beat India in the 2007 World Cup and we will continue the tradition,

(d) India’s top bowlers are injury prone and I feel that Zaheer Khan and Ashish Nehra will not be available for them in the final.
