Nakhaya Ntini Retires From International Cricket

The recent T20 match between South Africa and India, played at the magnificent Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban, marked the final international appearance of a true pioneer of cricket. After overcoming rape allegations in 1999, Ntini forced his way back into the team and remained there for more than a decade. During this period, South Africa’s controversial policy of selecting a minimum number of black players was debated at length, but there was never any doubt that Ntini was in the team purely for his superior skills and consistent performances.

The final element of Ntini’s legacy has little to do with the color of his skin or the skill with which he threw. I think there are probably two ways to really sum up this most important element of Ntini’s fantastic career; his big smile and celebrating his 100th test. Fittingly on home soil, Makhay’s 100th Test was a celebration. The South African beer company sponsoring the team offered free beer to the cheering crowd and the raucous patrons reciprocated by singing and dancing to their great bowling hero.

Of course, this flattery has a lot to do with that winning smile. Ntini was a fierce opponent who ran and threw relentlessly and always with aggression and verve. But a fantastic smile was never far from his face. Makhaya was always willing to see the funny side, but that never hindered his competitiveness and professionalism. This is what has endeared him to fans and players alike, evidenced by the warm embrace Ntini received from the Indians as they walked off the field in Durban last night.

In this era of endless matches in too many formats with a thousand forgettable faces, cricket is lucky to celebrate someone so dynamic. And we celebrate as we remember and say one more time…All Hail Makhaya!
