Saina Nehwal – Profiling a Badminton Champion

The popularity of cricket in India is both a blessing and a curse. It’s a blessing because cricket is a sport in which Indians excel, even though the country has no discernible sports culture.

Thus, the game’s popularity in a country of over a billion has ensured that cricket is akin to a booming industry. A talented young cricketer can hope to earn a lucrative living from the game.

The game’s popularity also acts as a curse in India, with other sports taking a maternal turn, partly due to the excessive attention cricket demands and receives from all involved.

If any sportsman excels in a sport other than cricket, he does so in spite of the system, not because of the support derived from it.

When you think about it, you begin to understand the true greatness of a master athlete like world chess champion Viswanathan Anand or Olympic shooting gold medalist Abhinav Bindra. These champions shone with the power of their own efforts.

The latest of this breed of champion athletes is Saina Nehwal, a 20-year-old Indian badminton player who on July 15, 2010 climbed to number two in the world rankings announced by the Badminton World Federation (BWF).

When Saina Nehwal defeated Julia Xian Pei Wong of Malaysia in the final of the 2006 Philippine Open, she became the youngest ever and the first Indian woman to win a four-star tournament.

This was the defining moment of a career that was launched when Saina’s father signed her up for a summer training camp at the Lal Bahadur Stadium in Hyderabad in 1998. She was born in March 1990 to parents who were former badminton champions themselves, from an Indian state. from Haryana, Saina went from strength to strength until five years later she won the Czech Junior Open and announced her arrival on the international badminton scene.

This was followed by a series of successes that served to confirm her championship potential. Winner’s crown at the Asian Satellite Badminton Tournament in the same year, followed by the Senior Women’s National title and gold medal at the 2007 National Games, 2008 Chinese Taipei Open Grand Prix Gold and the National Championship for the second year. , all this served to firmly establish her among senior players, even in her teenage years.

She continued to sparkle at the junior level, winning gold at the 2008 Commonwealth Youth Games, followed by the BWF World Junior Championship crown, the same year Saina entered the world top ten for the first time.

2009 was to be even more fruitful as she won the Indonesia Super Series and the Indian Open Grand Prix.

Then came a hat-trick of titles in 2010, which was to propel Saina first to third in the world rankings and then to second: the India Open Grand Prix Gold was followed by the Singapore Open Super Series and the Indonesia Open Super. Series.

Saina, originally from Hyderabad, India, involved an investment of time and money that drained her parents’ limited resources until she attracted her first sponsor in Yonex in 2002, followed by Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd, a Fortune 500 company, after her victory in the Czech Open.

She was finally noticed in 2005 by the Mittal Champions Trust (MCT), an initiative of Laxmi Mittal, a steel tycoon. The Trust has a clear objective to put India on the medal map for the 2012 London Olympics by sponsoring talented athletes with world-class potential.

If her victory at the Philippines Open justified the faith the MCT placed in Saina, her vaulting to the world No. 2 ranking must surely be considered a huge step toward a 2012 Olympic medal.

Saina’s prodigious talent was first honed by SM Arif and then by P. Gopichand, former All England champion and current national coach of India. Since 2008, Saina has been coached by Indonesian badminton legend Atik Jauhari.

Indian badminton legend Prakash Padukone believes that Saina can become world number one. Coming from a man who once defeated Morten Frost, arguably the greatest player of all time, en route to the All England Open title, this prophecy must surely make the world sit up and take notice.
