The Reality of The Indian Civil Services Examination
As has been shown in T-20 cricket, even in the civil services exam, the result is not guaranteed. Many cricket lovers expected Srilanka to win the 2009 world cup tournament but Pakistan’s victory surprised many. Although both the teams worked hard, luck also seems to have favored Pakistan. Luck also plays a role in the state exam, apart from many other qualities that candidates must acquire before deciding to appear for this exam.
A view transformation is required:
Many failed and academically poor candidates commit another mistake of blindly blaming their own mistakes without fully knowing the facts. In a country like India where the competition is huge even for a single bank clerk post, we can imagine the competition for the most prestigious post in the country i.e. IAS. For IAS, the number of vacancies is very less every year, but the number of candidates who apply for this competitive exam is very high.
Candidates need to change their personality, attitude, appearance etc. They also need to interact with some selected candidates for proper orientation and guidance. According to some trainers, the selection of optional subjects is half!. SWOT analysis is a must for candidates who would like to appear in this toughest exam of the nation. How can we swim in a river without knowing how deep it is? Unlike other competitive exams, many factors play a role for success in civil service. UPSC (Union Public Service Commission) tests many qualities in the candidates through this exam as the selected candidates will formulate the policies and determine the direction and future of our nation.
The state administration is not a bed of roses:
For IAS itself, a considerable number of candidates are selected in the first attempt. Many candidates even secured All India 1st in their first attempt!. There are also many cases where you don’t get any service even after seven attempts. Other wise candidates would get IPS or IFS or IRS in their first attempt and get IAS in second or third attempt. There are also cases where Ph.D. they don’t get the required service and B.Tech’s, MBBS and M.Tech are selected for IAS at the age of 21!.
There are many candidates who have planned well to achieve their dream of IAS. Initially these candidates join small job for financial security and after some time they get service.
An IAS or IPS officer should know something about everything. Many aspirants who are appearing for the exam for the first time do not even know what to read and what not to read and thus waste their most valuable energy and time reading many irrelevant and extracurricular topics. They run from pillar to post for the right item and also look for the right coaching center. Some candidates spend two years in Chennai, two years in Hyderabad and finally go to New Delhi and so on.
The syllabus and exam pattern are formulated in such a way that only the best of the candidates will be selected to serve the nation. A candidate must start preparing for this exam early in life preferably after 12th class if he is serious about getting the service. Success cannot be guaranteed for poor candidates and those who start their preparation after graduation or graduation. Adding fuel to the problem is that the performance of other candidates in this exam across India cannot be known.
Civil services should not be the end of the road:
Any serious aspirant can appear for this exam once or twice but should not sit for several years. If one is not selected or passes in three attempts, it means that it is not the ideal steel structure of our nation. In other words, one is not up to par.
However, highly committed candidates achieve success at any cost. Average and poor candidates should think twice before wasting several years preparing and appearing for this one of the toughest exams in India.
Note: IAS is short for Indian Administrative Service and IPS is Indian Police Service. T-20 is for twenty twenty cricket tournament. IRS is for Indian Revenue Service and IFS is for Indian Foreign Service.
