Tarot Cards – Understanding & Interpretation – How to Easily Read The Minor Cards
There are many arguments about the minor tarot deck, and some readers ignore them and prefer to use only the main cards. Major cards certainly seem more dramatic, focused, specific, and emphatic, but when the reading includes minor cards, it enhances the importance of the major cards and puts them into perspective.
Without the Minor cards, the reading can easily become too overwhelming and throw the interviewer into a big soap opera. When used correctly, the Minor cards add important light and shadow, touches of everyday reality, as well as many small but vital elements not touched or covered by the large Major deck. However, for beginners, the 56 Minor cards can be a daunting prospect to learn and read without referring to a crib sheet, so here’s a quick start.
The 21 main cards are unusual and you will quickly remember their main aspects. Once you get used to these cards, look again at cards 1 (Magician) through 10 (Wheel of Fortune). The Fool stands aside and cards 11 to 21 represent more developed states. The 10 human conditions that are represented in the first half of the Major deck are repeated in each of the four suits of pip cards (which are, of course, 1 through 10). So the Wizard is represented by every Ace, the High Priestess by every 2, the Empress by every 3, etc. When you know the main cards 1 to 10, you also know the other 40 cards. The trick is to apply the meaning of the main card to the color of the minor card:
The main themes of cards 1 to 10 are:
1 Uniqueness, individuality, constancy (magician)
2 Duality, partnership, ambivalence (High Priestess)
3 Growth, Education (Empress)
4 Stability, Logic, Method (Emperor)
5 Authority, Conflict, Conformity (Hierophant)
6 Choice, Sacrifice, Altruism ((The Lovers)
7 Control, Conquest, Challenge (The Chariot)
8 Justice, morality, ethics (fairness)
9 Awareness, Meditation, Truth (The Hermit)
10 Chances, New Potential, Closure (Wheel of Fortune)
Take the time to re-read the interpretive meanings of the main cards with these themes in mind. You may have a deck in which Power and Justice are transposed with Power as the major card number 8 and Justice as the number 11. If this is the case, you must remember that the Minor 8 is related to Justice, not Power.
To connect the above theme with the Minor card in the reading, you need to understand the associations for each color:
Swords
Swords represent intellect, ideas, plans, problems, things we deal with in the mind. Astrologically, swords represent the element of Air.
Wands/batons
Wands represent life force, energy, creativity, motivation. Our drive. Astrologically, Wands represent the element of Fire
Glasses/chalices
Cups represent the emotional and spiritual. Love, dreams, beliefs. Astrologically, cups represent the element of water
Coins/Pentacles
Coins represent the material world, sensuality, our appetites, practicality. Astrologically, coins represent the element of Earth.
Go through your deck a few times, read the meanings for each of the first 10 main cards and match them to a minor card of the same number in each suit, thinking about the meaning of the main card in terms of the minor associations listed above. . For example, 7’s are all associated with Major Arcana card number 7, The Chariot; Chariot is a card that is associated with control, conquest and challenge. Control issues can take many forms and can be positive or negative. With the 7 of Swords, we know that these main associations are associated with intellect, ideas, plans, problems; these are the associations of the suit of swords and the element of Air.
We are immediately clear about what the control is a problem with. At this point the reader considers the position the card is in and gives it a more precise context, such as the area of family and loved ones or the area that represents hopes and fears. These areas are defined by the type of spread used. In addition, the reader can connect this 7 to the other cards in the interpretation, with the entire interpretation being further shaped by the client’s questions. With control associated with intellect, we might well look at issues of self-control, perhaps in terms of lack or perhaps in terms of manipulation. If there was a 7 of Cups, we could be looking at issues like an unwillingness to commit to emotional needs; or over-reliance on them.
The 7 of Wands could indicate a lack of control over passions or a tendency to take on too much at once. The point is that all of these possible meanings appear in context when reading if you understand the Major card’s color and main theme associations with that number. The position in the spread then puts things into context.
A little practice with this method and your reading will become richer and more fluent, your confidence will grow and so will your reputation.
