India Down Under: Time for Test Captain Dhoni to Go?

A few months ago, no one would have thought of such a thing, but the cat is out of the bag – is it time to do away with MS Dhoni as Test captain? The man and the tactician who led India to more heights than any other captain – T-20 champions, ODI World Cup, Asian Championship and the highest-ranked Test side – are now being questioned. So is it curtains for Dhoni, the Test captain?

Is it time for Captain Cool?

Regardless, Dhoni’s talent has always been his cricketing talent that has separated him from the rest. Years ago, when no one was willing to take the lead in the final over against the West Indies in the Hero Cup final, it was Sachin Tendulkar who simply ended captain Azharuddin’s predicament by grabbing the ball and delivering those magical six balls.

It was different with Dhoni. Here was a skipper who didn’t think twice and simply bowled Joginder Sharma at last in the T-20 World Cup final. The dressing room grapevine suggests that when Sehwag ran amok, too much Dhoni dropped him and instead got Yusuf Pathan to open India in the same high-octane final.

Dhoni’s out-of-the-box thinking has done the team good, and while they may look like smart cricketing decisions, his decisions look like lucky breaks in retrospect. And that with luck is that it usually tends to run out. With six consecutive overseas defeats, everything seems not right about Dhoni. The only question bigger than Dhoni’s immediate future as Test captain is, if not Dhoni, then who? The only one with a prize is Virender Sehwag and if the newspaper reports are to be believed then it looks like he has already started knocking on the door.

Would axing MSD as test captain be a bit too harsh? There have been equally impassioned arguments on both sides, but the one thing that seems to be working in Dhoni’s favor is that he still seems to be the best man to lead. Kapil Dev is of the view that Dhoni can only be blamed so much if the big guns – Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid and VVS Laxman along with Sehwag – are not firing on all cylinders. But the counterargument is, isn’t it up to the captain to deploy his resources better? More than anything else, Dhoni’s odd decisions, like replacing bowlers who are effective in the middle or playing too defensively, create the platform for disasters of which there have been too many in the recent past.

There comes a time in every captain’s tenure when the future looks extremely bleak and that is the hour for Dhoni, the Test captain. Dhoni’s fabled ‘out-of-the-box’ thinking seems to have found its way into the box-within-a-box and it seems to be working from there. As a stand-in captain, Sehwag has a good track record and knowing the swagger that strikes fear into any opposition bowler, he will be in better control when he has more responsibility on his shoulders. If Sourav Ganguly had gone all guns blazing and Dhoni like Dravid and Anil Kumble had shown more restraint than guts, Sehwag might have lived up to Dhoni’s one-day enthusiasm in the five-day format better than the man himself. If nothing else, Sehwag could stop throwing his wicket and that alone could turn things around for India.
