All Eyes Are On The Rugby World Cup
The Rugby World Cup is only 20 years old and only takes place once every four years. However, interest in the competition is growing every time.
Rugby has its dramas just like football, but as football has veered off the beaten track to become more of a business, die-hard sports fans are beginning to notice that rugby is the whole sport.
Around four billion people around the world are expected to tune in to the six-week tournament, a true testament to rugby being the ultimate global sport. Compare that to the estimated ten million people who watched the thrilling final between England and Australia four years ago in Sydney.
The hosts of the 2007 Rugby World Cup are none other than our continental neighbours, France. After losing the 2006 World Cup final to Italy and missing out on a bid for the 2012 Summer Olympics, the Rugby World Cup brought a renewed sense of confidence to the French. France will host a total of 48 matches over the course of the six-week competition, culminating in the final at the Stade de France on October 20.
Since the opening match in September, the 2007 Rugby World Cup has had fans glued to their television screens. Underdogs Argentina beat France before making it to the final knockout stages, England’s stumbling start, the Welsh and Irish knocked out after the group stage and with England gaining momentum I’m sure the tournament will have a few more surprises in store before October 20.
Thousands of English, Welsh, Scottish and Irish fans have already made the trip to France to catch some of this year’s action. With France being one of Britain’s most popular holiday destinations, it’s no surprise that travel to France has increased.
The Stade de France holds no fewer than 80,000 spectators and provides a suitable venue for the final on 20 October. The Stade de France is located in Saint-Denis, a short distance from Paris. The best way to get to the stadium is by train. Eurostar tickets will be in high demand as the journey between London and Paris currently takes around 2 hours 30 minutes. The Stade de France stop is then 35 minutes by train from Gare du Nord.
So whether you go to the final or if you’re one of the millions watching on TV, the 2007 final looks set to be quite the spectacle.
