Twenty20 Cricket Lottery Explained
Twenty20 cricket is often described as a lottery. Is that a fair description? Does it do the game justice?
Cricket is one of the oldest games on the planet. Like every major sport (cricket, tennis, golf) the English seem to have invented it and the rest of the world has beaten them to it. It is only matter of time.
The same happened with the latest form of cricket – Twenty 20. It was invented by the English and was first introduced in the district circuit. Since its inception, there have been two Twenty20 World Cups with winners from the subcontinent – India winning the inaugural event in 2007 and Pakistan winning in England in 2009. The third World Cup 2020 in the Caribbean is just days away. time to make some predictions regarding the possible outcome of the tournament…
Here’s the thing. Cricket purists of the game don’t like Twenty20 that much. There is a perception that Twenty20 cricket tips the game even further in favor of the batsmen and against the bowler. Additionally, many suggest that the game’s shorter format reduces it to a bit of a lottery. In just 20 overs, either side can win and it just depends on who carries the most with their luck.
Now, I’d be the first to admit that I love Test cricket. For my money, this is the pinnacle of the game that should be the benchmark for every cricketer. But at the same time, there is great beauty in the game of Twenty20. The beating of the bats makes people who don’t even consider themselves cricket fans stand up and take notice. We saw a level of excitement for the game that seemed to be forever waning. T20 cricket has seen the arrival of some of the most innovative shots ever seen – the Dilscoop being the most notable of course, but we’ve also seen the ever-evolving nature of both the reverse and conventional sweeps. It all goes to show how multi-faceted cricket is and how great a game it really is.
But is it really such a lottery? There is a school of thought that suggests this is not the case. Here’s why. Spin played a significant role. Bowlers actually win matches as well as batsmen (although their figures don’t look good in the conventional sense). Finally, teams that have more match-winners in their sides throughout the tournament tend to go further.
Of course there is another side, but can we really call Twenty20 cricket a lottery?
