BWF World Championships 2018 LIVE: Chen – Viktor Delivered Nail-Biting Match

Chinese legend Chen Long avenged his loss – from last season’s semi-finals – to world number one Viktor Axelsen in the quarter-finals at the 2018 BWF World Championships in Nanjing, China.

Chen took almost an hour to eliminate the Dane in straight sets 21-19, 21-11.

Starting with an early 4-0 lead, the 35-year-old Chen dominated the rally with all his experience against the 24-year-old with deception and accurate baseline judgments to seal the first game.

In the second game, Chen never let Viktor get within range and maintained a huge gap for the highest point.

Earlier, third seed Shi Yuqi of China entered the semifinals after losing a three-set match in the round of 16 against Taipei’s Chou Tien Chen in a 72-minute match.

The Chinese, who could have won the first game with a 14-11 lead, was left stranded as his opponent cruised to 7 points in a row and a game.

In the second game, Shi improved by points from 6-4 to 13-4, but Chou somehow managed to catch his opponent with a trail of 14-16.

Shi played a lazy game with a huge point difference against the Taipei player. However, third seed Shi changed gears to tie the score at 16-16 and then won three straight points.

Chou could have gained another point before falling to the Chinese.

What an incredible victory for world number three and Indian Olympic champion PV Sindhu who produced a sensational performance against Japanese powerhouse Nozomi Okuhara. The nail-biting 58-minute match was a series of exciting rallies, cross-court falls, furious backhand smashes and tactical trick shots.

Sindhu’s sheer confidence and poise on court overcame Nozomi’s wit and tact as the talented champion wrapped up the match with a winning score of 21-17, 21-19. In both sets, Nozomi was strong enough to see off her Indian opponent, but Sindhu’s patience and psychic reading played well in her favor as she got into the flow and played smart.

In the men’s singles, Sai Praneeth played well, but in a 38-minute neck-to-neck match, he ran well against Japanese champion Kento Momota. Sai Praneeth lost the match 21-12, 21-12.

It’s a really good day for the Chinese mixed doubles players as they scripted the quarter-finals with the most wins at the 2018 BWF World Championships in Nanjing, China.

Lower seeds Zhang Nan and Li Yinhui defeated Denmark’s Mathias Christiansen and Christina Pedersen 21-15, 22-20 in a match that lasted 53 minutes.

Trailing 7-11 in the first half of the opening game, the Chinese raced to the lead with 6 straight points before taking the game to their account. And the second game was a neck-to-neck encounter, which the Chinese reasoned.

In the other mixed doubles match, India’s Satwiksaraj Rankireddy and Ashwini Ponnappa ended their challenge after losing to top seeds Zheng Siwei and Huang Yaqiong of China 17-21, 10-21 in the quarterfinals.

Satwik and Ashwini are the only unseeded pair left in the mixed doubles, never getting a chance to rally on court from the start.

The 2017 Worlds runner-up, Zheng, was in good form on the back court, while Yaqiong was very aggressive at the net. The cohesive pair poached well by mixing pace from behind and at the net.

Ashwini rallied for the game with all her experience, while teenager Satwik revealed a few nerves with a few serving errors and power-play smashes in the opening game. But as the match progressed, the junior rose well to help the senior close the gap at 17-18.

Later, a service error from Satwik cost the game.

It was one-way traffic from the top seeds who raced to a slim 11-4 lead. The Chinese pair closed the game again with a comfortable win after Satwik’s mistakes.

In the next match, the English pair of Chris Adcock, Gabrielle Adcock lost to Chinese star players Wang Yilyu and Huang Dongping 13-21, 18-21 in a match of 44 minutes.

The highlight of the match was the battle for smashes between the teams.
