Sachin Tendulkar – God of Cricket
Sachin Tendulkar defines everything a man should be. Sachin proves the superiority of humans over all creatures created by God. Of all the creatures created by God, humans are the only ones with an exceptional rational brain. In fact, it is the only thing God has gifted them with – the mind and its indomitable spirit. Sachin used this very spirit to move into the realm of supremacy. He was armed with nothing but his vision. He knew his true vocation, his purpose in life, and then gave himself completely to the cause without thinking what the end result would be. And I firmly believe that it was this total dedication that made Sachin what he is today. Sachin did not begin to impress others; it was only his dream that he was chasing, it was only perfection that he desired most. His truth was his only motive. His own truth and his own work to achieve it in his own way. And only by living for himself and his dreams could he achieve such glory that all mankind sees and imitates.
It maximally embodies the human spirit. Second raters see in him what they know they can never achieve – and that makes them insecure, so they put all their efforts into drowning this man. He refuses to be bogged down by mediocrity. He worked tirelessly against all odds, always believing in himself and never doubting his own abilities. In his first interview (when he was just 16 years old) he said that he would like to play against the fast pace bowlers of the world because the ball on the bat comes much faster!!! He was supremely confident in his abilities, not because of the incompetence of others, but because he knew his own ability to overcome any obstacle thrown his way. He just did what he had to do; what was he supposed to do He never went after fame, admiration or recognition, because none of these were in his hands – all in the hands of the “fickle” crowds. So he just concentrated on his game – a thing that was completely within his reach. This also helped him avoid all the noise and focus all his energy on his playing.
The small matter of the World Cup
It would not be fair that such a person should not have the highest recognition of his chosen sport. 18,000 ODI runs, 14,000 Test runs, 99 centuries in both forms of the game; 6 World Cups, top run scorer in 2 of them, highest overall run scorer in all WC matches – it would almost be cruel to deny this man a World Cup medal and a place in WC Champions history. But no, we forget that this man has a habit of writing his own destiny. He had to succeed; in fact, now that he has won the cup, it seems that it was only a matter of time before this great cricketer would put his hands on the cup.
Any other player might have thought of retirement after the agonizing defeat in 2003. Most of the others would surely have finished after the debacle of 2007, when he was criticized not only by an unpleasant coach, the media, self-proclaimed “critics”, but also by a few of his fans and followers. But little did we know that his desire to take India to the top was greater than the combined malevolence of the people mentioned above whom I call the ‘secondaries’. He chose to fight back because there was never a moment when he doubted his own abilities – if he had, he would surely have left the international arena. Sachin decided to hang on and fight back and he did it in the best possible way – scoring tons of runs and scoring runs. Right after that disastrous WC, Sachin seemed in a different lane. He was more focused and determined and his wrath fell on Australia for the first time in the CB series which he won for India with 2 stunning 90’s innings. But that was just the beginning of a long journey; a journey that had only one goal – the 2011 World Cup, which he knew would most likely be his last chance at the cup. And Sachin knew it would be a long journey. And so began the act of self-preservation.
Today we see him playing all those wonderful shots and we often comment that he is extremely gifted but we neglect the training, amount of work, effort and time that Sachin put in for each shot. The aching muscles, the swollen heels and the pain he must endure to execute each stroke to perfection are easily forgotten in the ecstasy of watching the great man play. There will come a day when sore muscles win the race against the will to play. But let that not allow us to forget the simple fact that Sachin was not just a great cricketer; he was an ideal human being; who decided to follow his dreams and give it his all. A man who continued to set new standards even after reaching the top, a man who believed in himself and fully supported his abilities, a man with a dogged determination who never gave up.
