Have You Been to Obudu Ranch Mountain Race?
The Obudu Ranch Mountain Race is rapidly gaining popularity in the world right now as it is the highest paying mountain race in the world. Apart from being the best paying money, it is also one of the most beautiful tourist attractions of today.
Obudu Cattle Ranch is located deep in the tropical and mountainous rainforest of northern Cross River State in the South-South geopolitical zone of Nigeria. The ranch is known for its beautiful and charming landscape; equipped with an airstrip, international hotels, golf course, cable cars, canopy walkway, wilderness and water park. The forest is also blessed with a variety of beautiful flora and fauna.
The Obudu Ranch Maintenance Race is an 11.25km race with 810m of elevation gain up to 1,600m (over 5,000ft) above sea level. The race was initiated by the immediate past governor of Cross River State, Donald Duke, to highlight the most beautiful mountain/tourist attraction in sub-Saharan Africa. The race was sanctioned by the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) and the World Mountain Running Association; is open to male and female mountain runners from around the world.
Weekly activities during the annual competition include: Road show; Stakeholder Dinner with Government Officials, Sponsors, Tourism Authority, LOC and Agencies; Anti-Doping Seminar and Bonfire Night with musical entertainment, comedy, barbecue, games and raffle. The total prize money for the 3rd Obudu Ranch Mountain Race was $245,000, up from $227,000 the previous year. It is currently the highest paying mountain race in the world: the prize money has increased since then. The first all-male African Nations Mountain Championships held there attracted $15,000 for 1st, $10,000 for 2nd and $7,500 for 3rd. It is a place that every mountain runner would like to visit and at least feel like a championship. Each participant also has the opportunity to be treated to Efik’s popular Edika-ikon soup, Afang soup, Ekpan and Ekpan-kukuo delicacies.
The level of this place has been raised to international standard so that the Federal Government of Nigeria now has a special reservation for its visitors. It would be recalled that President Olusegun Obasanjo was even there during one of his vacations when he was in office; he even rode the popular cable car. Why not make time to visit the Obudu Cattle Ranch or at least take part in a race in the mountains?
