Mandela (Madiba)

History Day. A day that will never be forgotten. The day Nelson Mandela was released from prison. South Africa was on the tongue that day. History was overwritten on that particular day (not good with dates, so sue me for not remembering the exact date, but the pictures are still fresh).

Nelson Mandela stepped onto the world stage in a big way. A man of honor and dignity, a man with a heart for people. This man had every reason to hate and blame, but instead he came and started building a beautiful future for South Africa.

No Bush or Clinton, no Queen or Prince on this earth has done more to try to unite not only South Africa but the world.

Some South Africans tried to “hate” (more hate) him for political reasons, but he made it so difficult. Even at the ripe old age of 90, closer to 91 (July 18, 2009), he is still a statesman of the world and a father to South Africans. The man who made long sleeved shirts fashionable in South Africa and brought us a distinctive dance; long live Madiba.

Madiba united us wherever he went. In 1995, the country watched the Rugby World Cup as a unit and celebrated together in the streets when the Springboks (South Africa) won. He brought us the magic of Madiba to the sports fields of the world. I was never big on football but that sense of unity made me watch that historic match in 1996 when South Africa (Bafana Bafana) won the Africa Cup of Nations.

One day it will be gone (that day South Africa and the world will stop), but it will never go away. Obama, you have a decision to make.

If you want to experience the magic of Madiba and learn the Madiba jive, then South Africa is your destination.

Long live MADIBA!

2010 FIFA World Cup

Danny Jordaan, you have made us very proud. I wish I could describe the feeling of warmth, joy and pride I had and still have in Afrikaans, my language, when they announced South Africa as a successful bid for the 2010 FIFA World Cup. I believe God is on our side as South Africans. You have done a great job and I know you still have sleepless nights, but you see every difficulty as a challenge to prove to the world that we have arrived in the big time. When I saw on the news that the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium was almost ready, it was confirmation that everything was on track.

You deserve a year’s paid vacation after the World Cup. I will have to speak to the next president of the country, Reverend Kenneth Mesho, to take care of it.

Bafana Bafano, now is your time to shine. In 1996 you showed us that you are a force to be reckoned with. Well, it’s been a long and very worrying decline, but you’ve restored our hope. Play game by game and put South Africa first. Rev Meshoe can’t give you a year off when you win because the Premier Soccer League and FIFA will fight him tooth and nail, but I know you will get very big bonuses.

No pressure? Yes, no pressure, I can’t help but dream. Just go out there and make us proud.

With the Confederations Cup coming up in a few months, you have the chance to play against football’s big guns. Use your opportunity well.

The only problem I have with the 2010 FIFA World Cup is the fact that as a nation we begged God in the big stadium to favor us with the bid but we never thanked him in the same way when we were declared winners. I hope we can fix this soon. South Africa will be blessed even more as we bless God.

Thanks dad.

Nations of the world, we await your arrival. Are you ready for an African experience like you never dreamed of? Book your flight, accommodation and seats now.

migraines

As I watched Morning Live, a two-hour news and current affairs show this morning, I found that we are a nation to be reckoned with. When I turned on the TV, Leanne was talking to a professor about migraines and a breakthrough surgery being done in South Africa. Apparently people fly here from different continents to do this procedure.

Let me make two possible ads.

1 “South Africa, we’ll take your headaches away. Book your flight now, you’ll never take another headache tablet again.”

2.”Your husband is giving you a headache, fly to the land of sea, sun, wildlife, luxurious accommodations, friendly people, and Evita’s party. We’ll take your headache away and give you a new husband. Men, you can have the same experience.”

Heart

Years ago, when I was just a little boy, we gave the world Dr. Chris Barnard, a heart surgeon. He performed the very first heart transplant at Grootte Schuur Hospital in Cape Town.

What a breakthrough. To this day it is a mystery and a wonder to me. We thank God for giving us the wisdom and knowledge to do such miracles.

Do you need a new life? South Africa will not only give you a new life, but also a new heart. Having joked about it, I also see the spiritual significance of the new heart. So many times people would say you need a change of heart that somehow it has lost its power. Forgive me if I think about something, I have to say it. I’m not a flow writer. I’m just Steven D seeing and saying.

People of the world, don’t we all need a new heart? Aren’t we tired of wars, hatred and tyranny? Our hearts must return to their Creator.

Rugby

Two-time World Cup Champions. The Springboks are our proud export. England, Australia, New Zealand, France and more, do you envy us? Don’t answer me, I might regret asking.

Under the spell of Madiba’s magic, we won the World Cup in 1995 and twelve years later we did it again. I know America and some other countries are not known for their rugby, but they have other sporting codes that they excel at.

So if you are in one of these countries and want to experience the rugby “gees” (spirit) then Newlands in Cape Town or Loftus Versfeld in Pretoria is the place to be.

Peter De Villiers, coach the boys, another world cup is around the corner. You are two years old.

Cricket

Proteas (South Africa National Cricket Team), you have done us proud. Why are Australians so quiet? We want you to come and visit our country and experience our hospitality, but we are not sure how to offer it without a smile. Please, we have nothing against the Aussies, we just know on the cricket field that we are facing our worst enemy.

When you visit South Africa for the second leg of the cricket tour, we’ll be on our best behavior if Ponting doesn’t hit a six. Don’t expect to hear cheers when this happens. We’ll give you all our love off the field.

Having said all that, remember that we are also aiming for the #1 spot in the testing arena. Bring your flags and kangaroos, but don’t ask for mercy, you won’t get it.

The SA open tennis tournament returned with a bang this week. We have some of the world’s best golf courses. Surfing is big in South Africa. We’ve had our share of world champions in the world of boxing. Do you have all these in your country?

Well, you don’t have Desmond Tutu!
