A Nation At Fifty, Nigeria

On October 1, 1960, the whole world stopped because a giant was born. Nigeria became an independent nation and we gained political independence from our colonial masters thanks to nationalists who fought with all their hearts. Nigeria, our beloved country, has gained independence and this year the “giant of Africa” will celebrate its 50th birthday. I took the time to look at the journey of our beloved country since independence and I wonder how far we have come as a country?

This question is not one that I expect an immediate answer from. I have personally pondered this question for a while and I encourage you to do the same as you look at each area that makes up Nigeria as a country. I wonder again if the past dreams of our heroes have seen the light of day, how well we have traveled the last fifty years as an independent country. Our founding fathers charted the path to greatness for this country with patriotism and enthusiasm and refused to be discouraged until they saw the birth of their dream. But the key question remains whether we have kept the dream alive.

In academia, we are proud of our founding fathers, we have kept their dream alive. What is the level of our education after fifty years of independence compared to other countries of the world? A few years ago, our level of education was 6th in the world, but today it is unfortunately the case, we have a half-hearted graduate; a graduate who cannot defend his certificate is not talking about competing with his peers from other parts of the world.

After spending years in university and other colleges, we have graduates roaming the streets looking for work. Unlike what we had years ago where federal government jobs were waiting and begging to be accepted, but the situation today is not the same. The number of graduates is much higher than the number of vacancies, while the number of graduates is growing geometrically; vacancies are increasing at a snail’s pace.

In the economic sector, we have made our heroes proud or we have fallen into their hands and killed their dreams. According to an online report on the national flag of Nigeria, the white stripe in the middle means peace; green stands for agriculture, which remains the backbone of the national economy. Fifty years after independence we have managed to misuse the intention of the national flag and I ask where is our pride in the national flag? The center of gravity of our economy has completely shifted to oil and instead of building a multi-dimensional economic system; we managed to target one and successfully became a monoeconomic independent state. Agriculture, our initial economic pride has receded and faded, what a shame.

Our leaders care about nothing but their pockets, all they want is to enrich the masses and enrich their pockets. We no longer have a leader of the masses, but a self-interested leader. Didn’t you cause the work of our heroes to be useless? A national treasure has now become a personal treasure to line the pockets of selfish public holders, which is a shame and I ask again, does that mean you are fifty years old?

How well have we kept the peace? The hateful Jos crises have not done our beloved country any good, along with other crises have made us one of the countries on the terror list, has it been fifty years? Abia State has become the seat of kidnappers, what a shame for the giant of Africa in fifty. Is this the kind of dream our founding fathers had for independence, have we made their dreams a reality or a nightmare?

The energy sector is a no-go area, it has become a bucket-load situation. All the efforts to resuscitate the energy sector have not yielded any positive result, instead it continues to deteriorate and just like a friend once said, the federal government should sell the energy sector and distribute the money obtained from the sale to all citizens to do as they please. with their share”. A giant in his fifties, which we cannot boast of fifty days of continuous power supply. This is the journey of fifty years.

We still claim to be the giant of Africa, but the humble ones have overtaken the recognized giant. In football, we claim that we have reached a height that no other African country has reached. At the recently concluded World Cup in South Africa we failed to get past the first round, what an unfortunate experience. Besides football, let’s look at other sports; we are used to being a force to be reckoned with.

Political instability has been the next biggest calamity for us in the last five decades which has negatively affected us on institutional development which is essential for progress. Our structure of governance was barely developed when shortly after independence we ran into a series of political hurdles which subsequently resulted in an ill-fated 30-month civil war, which is certainly not the dream of those who fought for independence, the heroes of yesteryear; in the first fifty years after independence, we have certainly failed you.

However, my countryman, the journey of the next fifty years has just begun. A chance to right our wrongs and focus on wiping away the tears of our founding fathers, who are definitely not happy with what we’ve done over the last fifty years. We need to come together and focus on the strength in our diversity, focus more on our strength and pay less attention to our faults and weaknesses.

The journey to the next fifty years has just begun and how well we do depends a lot on what we start doing now, everyone must be on board and we must unite with one goal which is to make Nigeria a country for everyone. he wants to be all over the world. In the next fifty years, we should be glad that we made mistakes, learned from them, and improved. We should stop apportioning blame and pointing fingers. We should renew the heart and attitude towards national issues and make Nigeria the pride of our founding fathers in the world beyond.

When it comes to the power sector which is very crucial to national development, we should seek the hand of foreign experts to help improve power supply in Nigeria. However, it should be noted that the arrival of foreigners does not automatically guarantee improvement, so we must all work together to improve the situation by contributing our individual quota to improve the current situation.

Let’s start seeing and focus on the strength in our diversity and stop this inhumane act of killing each other in the name of religion and tribe. Nigerians are known to be people of extraordinary strength and hard work, let’s focus on these positive qualities and make Nigeria the pride and giant of Africa in deeds and just like Obama’s slogan “yes we can”.

And just as the President said on October 1st during his Independence/Jubilee Address, “The greatest resource we have is the youth; we are most interested in the transformation of our nation. It is time for us to answer the call and contribute to the Nigerian Freedom Foundation. This is how this generation will succeed. This is how we make the most of these opportunities. This is how we will ensure that in five decades when our children and grandchildren celebrate the centenary of our country’s independence, we will remember that we contributed to the great history of Nigeria.

I am personally committed to this course of nation building and to making our founding fathers proud of what they fought for. The journey starts now, so let’s get to work, God bless Nigeria.
