Ikechukwu Uche – The Little Striker With a Big Heart
Ikechukwu Uche started his humble football career with a local team – Amanze United FC from Aba before joining Division One team – Iwuanyanwu Nationale FC from Owerri in Imo State, Eastern Nigeria. He is a natural striker with a flair for beautiful goals.
Born in 1984 in the industrial city of Aba, as a youngster he grew up loving the round leather game and his passion for football took him from the Nigerian shores in 2001 when he signed his first professional football contract with the Spanish second division. outfit-Racing de Ferrol at just 17 years old.
His dribbling skills and clinical finishing in front of goal earned him a move from lowly Racing de Ferrol to Recreativo de Huelva. During the 2003-2007 football season, he played some of his best football at Recreativo, making 133 appearances for them and scoring an incredible 50 goals in the process.
Uche later joined Getafe FC at the end of the 2007 season after helping Recreativo to the Spanish top flight. However, it hasn’t been a busy start for the 1.7m Uche, who was mostly used as a substitute during his time at Getafe.
His stay at Getafe soon came to an end in 2009 when Real Zaragoza offered the diminutive striker a four-year deal that saw him become one of their star strikers. It was a sad start for Uche at his new club as he suffered a horrific knee injury while playing for his new club in his second game against Sevilla FC.
He ended up on the sidelines for 8 months recovering and rehabbing before suffering another knee injury in the 2010/11 season. It’s been a tough time for the Nigerian striker, who has been desperate to impress for both club and country. Forming a lethal strike unit with Kalu Uche (elder brother) before his injury woes, Uche missed the 2010 FIFA World Cup hosted by South Africa due to injury concerns.
Before his injury, he was a super-regular player for the Super Eagles of Nigeria, featuring in 22 senior national team matches, netting a total of 5 goals. He is one of the most talented strikers in the current Super Eagles fold with good dribbling, ball control and strong aerial power. He can use both legs to attack, which is another advantage given that some attackers are one-legged.
With Nigeria fielding the Ethiopian national team in a crucial Africa Cup of Nations match scheduled for the Abuja National Stadium on March 27, 2011, there are already agitations by the football loving Nigerian fans for coach Samson Siasia to include the dynamic striker in the squad . to face the Ethiopians as he gradually worked his way back to match fitness.
