ICC World Cup 2011 – Sri Lanka, Bangladesh Venues

The 2011 ICC FIFA World Cup will be co-hosted by India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh; venues in these countries have been completed.

Originally, Pakistan also co-hosted some of the matches to be held in the country. Under this plan, Bangladesh’s participation would be limited to hosting the opening ceremony.

In April 2006, citing security concerns, the ICC decided not to allow Pakistan to host any World Cup match, although it retained Pakistan as a co-host.

Pakistan tried to salvage the situation by declaring that the matches allotted to them would be played in Abu Dhabi, Dubai and Sharjah and not in Pakistan.

When the move failed, Pakistan tried to save face by demanding that Australia and New Zealand, who were also bidding for the cup, host the event.

As things turned out, the ICC stuck to its guns and the tournament will be co-hosted by India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh.

Three venues have been named in Sri Lanka to host some of the group matches and the semi-finals. Besides Colombo and Kandy, Hambantota is the third venue to host during the tournament.

The matches in Colombo will be played at the Premadasa Stadium, which has a capacity of 35,000.

Premadasa will host 5 Group A matches, including Sri Lanka vs Pakistan, which will be its first World Cup attraction on 10 March 2011.

Premadasa will also proudly host one quarter-final and one semi-final, on March 24 and 29, 2011.

New stadiums are being built in Kandy and Hambantota. The Pallekele International Stadium under construction in Kandy will, like Premadasa in Colombo, have a capacity of 35,000.

This stadium will host 3 Group A matches, starting with the Pakistan vs New Zealand match on March 8, 2011.

The Suryawewa Stadium in Hambantota, also under construction, will have a slightly smaller capacity than its counterparts in Kandy and Colombo, and 33,000 spectators will be able to watch matches held there during the World Cup.

This stadium will host its first match on 20 February 2011 when hosts Sri Lanka take on Canada in Group A. Only one more (group) match is scheduled here.

Bangladesh will use the two venues allocated by the ICC to host the World Cup matches. Apart from the capital Dhaka, Chittagong will also feature in the itinerary of teams traveling to Bangladesh during the tournament.

The Sher-e-Bangla Cricket Stadium in Dhaka has been on the international cricket map for several years and has a capacity of 35,000.

This stadium was honored to be allocated for the tournament opener between co-hosts India and Bangladesh in a Group B match scheduled for 19 February 2011.

Three more Group B matches are scheduled at this venue, which will also host two quarter-finals on 23 and 25 March 2011.

The 20,000-capacity Chittagong Divisional Stadium will be the next venue for the World Cup matches to be held in Bangladesh next year.

Bangladesh will face England in a Group B match here on 11 March 2011. One more Group B match has been allocated to this venue.

The tournament will culminate at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai where the winning semi-finalists will face off to decide the world champions.
