FIFA World Cup 2010: Cheaters Can No Longer Prosper?

Cheating by participants in the sporting arena is becoming a growing cause for alarm, with doping scandals and match-fixing incidents becoming too commonplace for comfort. The commercial aspect of modern sports dating makes players increasingly vulnerable to temptation, as the difference between winning and losing when measured in terms of money can amount to millions of dollars for the players in question.

Often times, football matches are reduced to theatrical opportunities for players to display their historic talent, either through dramatic crashes inside the rival’s goal areas or feigning penalty kicks.

While such theatrics are meant to entertain the team’s supporters, they have the opposite effect on the game’s organizers, who are looking for ways to curb what they perceive as blatant cheating. Ahead of a world tournament like the 2010 FIFA World Cup, organizers are concerned about any attempt to obtain results using dubious and illegal methods.

FIFA has issued a new directive to the 29 referees who will officiate at this year’s World Cup, which could change the fortunes of teams that have so far been ineffective in penalty shootouts. The referees are authorized to penalize any player who jokes during the penalty kick. Any goals scored will be disallowed and the kick will be retaken.

The decision will be welcomed by teams such as England who were knocked out of three of the last four World Cups on penalties, apart from Euro 2004 and 1996.

Referees were shown a video demo of the types of spot kicks now considered illegal under the ruling at FIFA headquarters near Pretoria, said Jose Garcia Aranda, FIFA’s chief referee.

The video featured mostly Brazilian players, showing a common tendency among South American players to kick on the spot. That should be good news for England who could face Brazil in the semi-finals.

FIFA is also tackling the threat of match-fixing, highlighted recently by the sacked head of English football, Lord Triesman, who accused the Spanish FA of conspiring to bribe referees at this year’s World Cup.

With the World Cup expected to generate over £3bn in legal betting in Europe, and a similar amount in illegal gambling in Asia, FIFA cannot afford to ignore the risk. Players, coaches and referees can report suspicious activity using a confidential hotline to an early warning system FIFA has set up to address the threat of match-fixing.
