Let’s Go Green With Nigeria At 50

Nigeria is one of the countries in the world where the color green plays a very important role. From the simple landscape to the exotic and untapped resources of a great nation, there is no shortage of green. The Nigerian flag is a rectangular strip that is divided into three equal parts. The main colors are in green. This represents the land and agricultural potential of the region, while the color white represents peace and unity.

The coat of arms of Nigeria is presented on another platform, which is a dignified green color. Two large horses rest on a base known as “Cactus spectabilis” – a wild flower that grows in many parts of the county. Green is the color that represents life. It is the color of the growing grass or the leaves of most plants. Choosing the color green for Nigeria is not a mistake. If you take a good look at the nation itself, it is clear that God had greatness in mind when He allowed a nation like Nigeria to exist. Although the country has experienced so many problems, God is interested in the affairs of Nigeria.

To be green is to live with eternity in view in all that one does. That’s exactly what our founding fathers did. They lived their lives so well that they could divide everything “FOREVER”; the world could not confuse or distract them. In fact, they had only one view of life, which knows no end – they were looking for a city that had foundations, whose Builder and Maker is God. They were heading for heaven to be home with the Savior who bought them with the price of His blood. In fact, they have associated the word “GREEN” with “ETERNITY” – an eternal past and an endless future – forever back and forever forward. They understood that the glory of heaven is eternal, so they decided to create a glorious earth for us.

Their philosophy and lifestyle should challenge us to see beyond the horizon—beyond the present to eternity; weigh things carefully and ask a probing question to reveal the possibilities and looks that abound in a world turned upside down. Before we do something today, we ask ourselves if these things are worth it or if they have eternal values? The things we do today have a way of influencing our eternal destinies. Nigeria is a country that is built on divine principles. Principles that do not imply abandoning social responsibility or acts of kindness as we see it today. Every little act of kindness is infinitely precious in the eyes of God, for He rewards with eternal blessings the giving of a cup of water to one of His own, and He blesses the one who does some good work, the least. brethren! An old, hackneyed cliché says that one can be so heavenly-minded as to be of no earthly use. Earthly minded people are those who have no earthly use for God’s kingdom.

To truly go green and remain what we were created to be, we must try to find the true value of our existence as a people in a great nation under one God. To find the true value of anything – any object, pursuit, relationship, property, investment, or anything else, we must divide it by “FOREVER”. If you were to estimate the apparent “tragedy” accurately, consider it on the scale of eternity. I read something like this somewhere that states that no tragedy is so great or unbearable unless it has adversely affected the eternal welfare of its object. Do you know that many of the pleasures and treasures that we seek today, that seem attractive, lose their value the moment we do a simple calculation with them? So why do we believe in green but toil with rusty iron? Going green at 50 requires simple arithmetic – divide it by forever and forever! Also discover that money, which has led so many of us astray, can seem finite until you weigh it in the scales of eternity. Sex and hedonism can also dazzle, but only until it separates them forever.

The principle of life requires us to look back at our individual lives to see if we are really as green as we are led to believe. We could have been fooled by natural chance. Or does going green require the ugly events taking place in the country today? Where do kidnappings, armed robberies, bombings, illegal detentions, extrajudicial killings, mudslinging and ethnic bias come from? Of course, these are not part of our green nature! These are distractions carefully crafted to deprive us of our share in the land of our inheritance. But in the midst of it all, it is comforting to know that our land is still virgin. The leaves are still green and there is life in every part of the nation. Nigerians should not give up; going green is a task to complete. Let’s put all hands on deck to build this emerging world power! God wants Nigeria to move from a life of scarcity and even plenty to a life of abundance. To achieve this, God quickly points each of us to his unchanging word – the Bible. In the Bible we understand the wonderful being and its benefits to us. GREEN color is one of the best things that God gave to man during creation. With colors doing wonders in the Nigerian nature today, God has placed something special in our hearts and hands. And so our future depends on our ability to recognize and use what we have.

This knowledge of a clean and GREEN nation is the answer Nigeria has to so many needs in life. It is a ticket out of poverty – a passport to prosperity. Since the color green does not represent acquisition, but creativity, your true prosperity will come if you do not pursue wealth acquisition instead of wealth creation. As we celebrate our 50th anniversary of independence, I pray for Nigeria and Nigerians to learn today how to tap into the knowledge of God and unleash their creativity. For Nigeria and Nigerians to be truly great, they must look GREEN as the color of the country represents – always ready to dissect everything they do “FOREVER” to determine its true value or worth. These are the hidden treasures that we didn’t realize we carry within us. Let’s take time to preserve and maximize it: Going GREEN with NIGERIA @ 50 is only possible if we look beyond time (the present) into eternity!
