Super Falcons Set to Reclaim Their Birth Rights
The Super Falcons of Nigeria are set to reclaim their birthright as a traditional African women’s football team as the African Women’s Championship kicks off in South Africa. The perennial champions, who have won 5 of the 6 editions of the championship, only lost the last edition to Equatorial Guinea, who also hosted the last edition.
The Nigerian team may have lost the last edition by underestimating their opponent; and partly because the team also had some fitness issues at the time. This time they are ready to bounce back into the showdown.
One of the things that would play in the Falcons’ favor is the coaching staff led by former African top scorer Uche Eucharia who is very experienced having featured in the first 3 editions of the Women’s World Cup. She was also at the first edition of the African Championship held in Abeokuta, Nigeria in 1998 as an assistant coach of the team.
Uche Eucharia is assisted by another experienced former member of the Falcons, Anne Agumanu, who was once a goalkeeper. With a team managed by past players who know the areas of strength and weakness of different teams, it would be easier for them to succeed in South Africa and eventually win.
Nigeria’s current squad is a mix of experience and youth as some of the players graduated from the U-20s who reached the finals of the Women’s Youth Championship in Germany this year.
However, one area the Falcons need to work harder on is on offense; during the U-20 Championship in Germany, it was evident that the team was struggling to convert the meager opportunities it had. With a very experienced striker as the current coach, this should no longer be a major problem.
The team is very strong in midfield and in defence: they only need to add one or two good forwards to boost the efforts of the midfielders. If the team can hold their own like the U-20s and U-17s have done recently, it would be easy for them to succeed with the experienced old-timers in the mix.
The Falcons play their opening match against Mali on November 1. Other teams in their group include host nation South Africa and Tanzania. The only major threat to their ambitions is an equally experienced host team that has not won a tournament title.
