EPL Referees and Controversy: Mike Dean
Mike Dean, 42, became a Football League assistant referee in 1995, ten years after he started refereeing. Two years later, he was promoted to walk-on umpire in the league. Dean then quickly rose in his refereeing career and joined the Premier League in 2000 and three years later was also promoted to referee international matches by FIFA.
Dean has been criticized for being loose with penalty awards, although his cards per game ratio is close to the norm. In 454 Premier League games up to the 2009–10 season, Dean issued 3.17 yellow cards per game; the corresponding ratio for red cards issued by the referee is 0.23. This means that in 24 games in the 2009–10 season, Dean gave away 16 penalties, an average of one per 1.5 games compared to the norm of one per 3.5 games. In fact, at least one player stated that he didn’t hesitate to go down to the opponent’s court because he knew that Dean was the umpire.
Chelsea won the Premier League last season. Like every Chelsea player, referee Mike Dean is believed to have had a hand in that triumph.
That the outcome of the match decided the eventual winner was evident as Manchester United ended their Premiership campaign just one point behind the champions. That’s not to say that Mike Dean was deliberately biased against Chelsea that day.
Among the highlights of the refereeing match was Mike Dean rejecting four penalty appeals, three of them by Manchester United. According to sections of the media that highlighted the issue, video evidence confirmed this.
Chelsea won the match with a final score of 2–1 in their favor thanks to Didier Drogba’s match winner from Salomon Kalou’s pass. Drogba was shown to be clearly offside on TV footage. The linesman in the eye of the storm was Simon Beck. Dean also conceded a handball goal from United’s Federico Macheda late in the game.
There was much speculation in the media when Dean was named to referee the game. The week before, in a match between Burnley and Blackburn Rovers, he awarded a penalty against Burnley that was widely criticised. Burnley manager Brian Laws went so far as to call the decision to appoint Dean as the referee for Man United v Chelsea as “crazy”.
Sir Alex Ferguson was extremely critical of Drogba’s offside incident which effectively handed the game to the Stamford Bridge team. But to some extent the handball incident in Macheda has undermined the credibility of United’s claim that it was tough.
