Ashes Series 2009 Preview- England Cricket Team

With less than 50 days to go until the Ashes, it’s hard to imagine an England XI that will be different from the one I’m about to show you. Events have conspired in such a way that all the ifs, buts, and maybes are seemingly set in stone. Ahead of the series against the West Indies in our colder climes, some dark gray clouds loomed over our proud cricketing nation and echoes of 50 repeat limes echoed around our shores. Hopefully the echoes have died down now.

SO WHAT HAPPENED?

3 consecutive tons by Ravi Bopara ended the streak of number 3 . . .

After 3 ducks in his first 5 Test innings in Sri Lanka, Ravi really showed his metal and scored 3 consecutive tons in his last 3 innings (made against weaker Windies opposition). He has shown that he can cut it with the big guns in the IPL and his stroke is majestic. He’s also a very confident young man who can hopefully hold his own when the inevitable Australian verbal firefight really flares up.

Picking Michael Vaughan would be a huge step backwards. Ian Bell has a similar story – against lesser nations he piles on the paddocks for fun with the elegance of his game, but facing the Aussies the elegance remains and the paddocks dry up. And we don’t even have to run into Rob Key, who has strongly secured his place in the past.

The task before Bopara is immense. His counterpart is arguably one of the best batsmen to ever play the game. Ponting plays in a very similar vein to Bopara – aggressive and classy – but the difference is that he has 11,000 Test runs at an average of over 56. If England go down by one wicket early on looking at Mitchell Johnson, Brett Lee, Stuart Clark, Peter Siddle, Ben Hilfenhaus or indeed any of the bowling options the Aussies decide to pick are far more daunting prospects than the Windies.

Can Andrew Strauss and Alistair Cook provide a solid platform again and again like they did against the West Indies or will Mitchell Johnson be licking his lips at the prospect of a juicy Bopara scalp coming first wicket?

England have the leading wicket-taker in Test Cricket for 2009 and He is A Spinner. . .

For anyone who misread it or thought they misread it, I’d like to reiterate. . .

England have a leading wicket-taker in Test cricket for 2009 and he’s a spinster!

Once again . . . no OK, I’ll stop, you understand me. Graeme Swann’s form has been a huge bonus for England so far this year. He currently has a Test bowling average of 26 and has claimed several prized scalps in the subcontinent with wickets against India. Loves the left-arm bowling which will hold England in good stead if the dismal partnership of Hughes and Katich survives England’s new-ball attack. He could be a good bet to stop the fluid Mitchell Johnson in his tracks.

I was asked the other day if I thought England could play 2 spinners. When was the last time England went into a test match with 2 spinners? Answers on a postcard. Certainly no 2 good spinners have played together in my lifetime. Let’s not get ahead of ourselves, I’d bank on England going into the opening Test in Cardiff with Swann on his lonesome.

England can take 20 wickets in a match. . .

When we’re playing in our own backyard, I think – for once – we’re very capable of getting 20 goals in a game. It was great to see Graham Onions step into frey and get Fivefor to debut. He takes wicket after wicket at good pace and looks a tasty bowler in typical English conditions. He has certainly secured a starting spot. As for Jimmy Andersen, he looks right at home at the helm of the offense right now and looks destined to really finally live up to the blistering potential he’s shown over the past 5 years or so. With a fit Flintoff, the final piece of England’s bowling line-up puzzle has been given to go behind Stuart Broad – he has faced real aggression in the recent Windies series and his batting will certainly be called into action for the Ashes. Could Broad be our answer to Mitchell Johnson?

Drumroll please. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .; England Likely Ashes starting line-up is

  • Andrew Strauss (c)
  • Alistair Cook
  • Ravi Bopara
  • Kevin Pietersen
  • Paul Collingwood
  • Andrew Flintoff
  • Matt Prior
  • Stuart Broad
  • Graeme Swann
  • James Andersen
  • Graham Onions

What other options do England have?

Ryan Sidebottom – I think he will find himself ahead of Harmison, Bresnan or Hoggard

Flintoff’s injury – you can never rule it out

KP does not recover in time – KP is not playing in the ODI series with Windies, but there is no doubt that he will be fit for the Cardiff Opener.
