Having spent most of my 3 years in New Zealand in Palmerston North, I have made a few observations backed by facts and evidence. This town isn’t too bad to live in, except it’s a bit too small and boring.

Here are 10 fun facts:

10) The International Pacific College campus hosts an annual Sakura Festival, usually on the third Saturday in September (spring starts in September). It’s a celebration of colors and cultures – many Japanese students wear kimonos and traditional Asian performances.

9) Palmerston North is known as the “Student City” because more than half of the city’s population is under the age of 33. A large proportion are students of Massey University, Universal College of Learning and International Pacific College.

8 ) Locals and students refer to Palmerston North as The Palms. The name is too much of a mouthful and Palmy probably sounds a little more affectionate. Although we find it boring and sometimes we all miss it when we leave.

7) The layout of the city looks almost like a grid with a square in the middle. And it is aptly named The Square, a 7ha park with the I-Site and the name of the city surrounded by lawn, gardens, trees and fountains.

6) The main shopping center in Palmerston North is called The Plaza. There is only 1 movie theater in this city (obviously several theaters). Fortunately, there are several good shops nearby for general shopping.

5) There are only 12 bus routes in Palmerston North. The frequency is about once every 30-60 minutes. Six of these buses go to Massey University on different routes. Good news – students ride for free.

4) There is a pile of rubbish at a local landfill called ‘Mt Cleese’. John Cleese described Palmerston North as the “suicide capital of New Zealand” and said: “If you want to kill yourself but don’t have the courage, I think a visit to Palmerston North will help.”

3) Palmerston North International Airport has no international flights. Freedom Air used to fly between Palmyra and Australian cities on the west coast, but stopped after March 2008.

2) On the South Island is the town of Palmerston. That’s why this town is called Palmerston North. It is named in honor of Viscount Palmerston, former Prime Minister of Great Britain.

If you are going to attend one of the tertiary institutions in Palmerston North, you will experience a relaxed school life there. The pace at school is much slower and there is always time for everything.
