Greatest ODI Finisher of All Time! Bevan or MSD

I see! Now decide if they would say Australian or Indian -> my friends. I had planned to write an article when Dhoni retired. But I can’t wait any longer. Mirror mirror on the wall. Who is the greatest finisher of all? Well, apart from that the only real contenders to be called the greatest one-day cricketers of all time are Michael Bevan and Mahendra Singh Dhoni. No, don’t make the mistake of comparing them as cricketers because Dhoni will win with his versatility. Just compare them as ODI finishers. That’s what I’m doing today. I came across some interesting facts and statistics.

First, let’s list some candidates who are deserving, even if they are not in the same league as these two specialists. Some of them are Lance Kluesner, Virat Kohli, Sachin Tendulkar, Mike Hussey, AB De Villiers and VIA Richards arguably the greatest one day batsman of all time. He and Sachin say no, we don’t need a finisher. We can finish the match long before the overs are completed with the resources available at the other end. But that’s a different story and a different kind of batsman.

By finisher we mean a batsman who doesn’t stay out at the end when the innings ends? No way. I mean the batsman who finished the match and won it for his team is the best finisher. In most cases such an innings will result in the batsman not being out at the end. But there are many innings in which the batsman has pretty much finished it before getting out. Sachin Tendulkar played two magical century innings against Australia in Sharjah in 1998, one to take India to the final and the other to win the final for India. He pitched in both innings. But it was a top-class finish and did the job for his country very effectively indeed. And that is where Bevan and Dhoni come into the picture. They made a real difference when it mattered most to their teams. And they did it many times. This fact alone leaves a clear daylight between them and others.

The best qualities of MS Dhoni is that he is calm about everything when everyone in the stadium and watching the match on TV is about to have a heart attack. This was largely the case with Michael Bevan. But Bevan had company during his time with solid batsmen like the Waugh brothers, Damien Martyn etc. Dhoni benefited from these batsmen at the other end as well but more towards the end of his career. Both were excellent runners between the goals. In addition, they were excellent judges of runs. They knew when to turn a single into a two and a two into a three, and also when not to take risks. This greatly increased the pressure on the opposition. Not only did the boundaries keep getting closer, but the running between the wickets killed the opposition’s game.

One area where Dhoni excels is the big hit. He can hit sixes and Bevan, on the other hand, was not a great hitter. He could step in when required, but not with the same consistency as Dhoni. That, in my opinion, is the real difference between the two. Bevan has won as many matches for his team as Dhoni, but more with petting and pushing than the controlled hitting of Dhoni. A finisher needs temperament and both had it. I say ‘were’ although Dhoni is still around. But I believe we have seen the best of him.

Most Indians will point to career strike rates to tip the balance in Dhoni’s favour, but Bevan played in a slightly different era where batsmen didn’t score at the same pace as they do today, apart from the Tendulkars, Waughs and Laras of course. And the teams also didn’t collect the same totals as today. So this statistic does not match Bevan. Both have great batting averages in excess of 50s. They absolutely killed the opposition with a brilliant finish. No matter how they did it, running or thrashing, it was clinical.

Dhoni’s completion is about his ability to do both: big hits and nudges, pushes and runs like a hare. Also, Dhoni played at a time when a lot of cricket was played and had to play multiple roles in T20, ODIs, Tests and IPL. That in itself is a twist. While Bevan played ODI cricket basically along with first-class matches and a bit of Test match cricket. Definitely less stress than compared to modern day cricketers like Dhoni. Maintaining fitness in such cases is very difficult. Dhoni succeeded, but Bevan faced a series of fitness problems towards the end of his career.

Michael Bevan was batting at No. 4 or No. 5 when he managed to achieve these brilliant finishes, while Dhoni at No. 5-6. This is mainly because Dhoni would be taking more risks than Bevan and because of the high price tag on his wicket, there must have been a tendency to push him down the order, although this is only a guess. Although Dhoni’s most famous innings in the 2011 World Cup final saw him play at No.4. It was thrilling to watch a great cricketer clinically finish the final with pride. And he finished it all with a six. It was like putting an exclamation point on the match and the World Cup!!

Most mortal cricketers in this world panic when the difference between the number of balls remaining and the number of runs to be scored starts to spiral out of control, but not these two. It was just incredible to watch them keep calm and go about their work as if it were their everyday job. You can see what these guys are made of with a finish that no one else can replicate so many times. Many great cricketers have graced the game and many of them have played stellar roles in their teams’ victories. But finishing games victoriously for your teams so many times? No. No one! These two just can’t be beat at it.

Bevan was part of two World Cup winning teams in 1999 and 2003. Notably, Australia were at the top of their game when he played ODI cricket and were in their prime. Dhoni won India’s only World Cup ODI in 2011, though he is still playing and I’m sure he considers the 2019 World Cup his last hurray.

Bevan has the highest batting average for a retired ODI cricketer at 53.58 while Dhoni currently averages 51.37 and will finish around 50. This also does not indicate any clear advantage for Bevan as Dhoni would take more risks and as a result they would have better success rate than Bevan, who will have a slightly better average. Both have played and won matchups with tail-enders, and many times. I can’t put into words how incredible it was to watch these men do it over and over again.

Another critical point that goes against Dhoni is the pitches he has played on. Bevan played on a big Australian ground that made it difficult to hit sixes, while Dhoni batted at a time when the game was tailor-made for batsmen and in Indian conditions that were always batsman-friendly. Although Bevan hails from an era of Australian dominance where the team was on the move, Dhoni has done away with India’s habit of being poor chasers. This is his greatest achievement for his country. Let me tell you that this is no mean feat because I have seen Indian cricket since the 1980s and it became a minor crisis then.

SAYING

I tried not to compare them to overall cricketers and talk about Dhoni’s captaincy or Bevan’s left arm bowling. They were like bonuses for their teams. I will not discuss the Bevan test record either as again it is not relevant to the topic. You can compare their stats all day long. You will find that they eventually balance each other out. But despite everything, I still can’t ignore the huge difference in the number of hits. It’s 15 points and I think that’s a real and telling difference. Need I say more?
