3 Golden Rules to Become the Best Footballer (Soccer Player) You Can Be

In this article, I will introduce you to 3 golden rules that will help you become the best football/soccer player you can be.

1. Think about your football in a useful and positive way

How you think about your football on a daily basis determines how you feel about your football overall and how you feel about football has a huge impact on how quickly you learn in training and how well you perform on match day.

I spend many hours every week teaching Premiership footballers how to think effectively after training and before a game. Here is one technique you can use:

I want you to write your top three plays. Write them down in detail as we discussed earlier. This will give you something to come back to every day, which will help you build and maintain a strong football image. It will help you take control of the memories you have of your football.

Remember the key moments when writing down your top three games. Key moments like runs you’ve made, tackles, blocks, passes and headers you’ve won. Add feelings to your story – “I felt strong, confident and strong” and “I felt like I was invincible”.

These are exciting images to remember and reinforce. If your friends or loved ones were watching you – what do you think they would see? Also write their opinion.

When you spend time off the field reminiscing about your best times, you’re feeding your brain and body confident images and images. A footballer who practices this technique on a daily basis will build confidence and feel great in training and matches – giving him a better chance to learn faster and play better with more consistency.

2. Exercise with a purpose

Having enough football ability is nice to have, but however talented you are, it’s the quality of your training that determines the trajectory of your football. In fact, it’s so important that I advise clients to stop using the word training and start calling it practice. And “any old practice” isn’t enough – conscious practice is important.

Deliberate practice isn’t easy, and it starts in the brain. He is not a soccer player who does an hour of training, does tic-tac-toe and hangs out with his friends. It is mentally and physically demanding. It’s the kind of focused, repetitive exercise where you’re constantly monitoring your performance, correcting, experimenting, listening to immediate and constant feedback, and always pushing what you’ve already achieved.

Next time you go to work out – make sure you set a goal, preferably a specific area you’d like to improve. Focus fully and push yourself out of your comfort zone by trying things that you don’t find easy on the field.

3. Control controllables

The biggest killer in football is distraction. Taking your mind off the game can lead to dangerous consequences. Focusing properly in football starts with understanding what you can and cannot control. There are a lot of things in soccer that you can’t control, and if you focus on them, you can easily get distracted while playing.

The most obvious of these is the weather and the condition of the course. It is quite obvious that you cannot control these aspects. And yet, how many footballers target them? Many times before a game I’ve gone to the field with the team and heard someone say, “I can’t believe how bad the field is. How can we play well on it?” Where do you think this footballer will focus during the match? Do you think he would be easily distracted?

Similar to the state of the pitch, I have heard footballers bemoan the weather. Last season a player came up to me on a Thursday and said he hoped it wouldn’t rain during the game on Saturday because he decided playing in the rain was a waste. Of course, I pointed out that if he wanted a career in professional football in England, he would probably have to get used to playing in the rain (it rains a lot in England!). Just kidding, do you think this player’s mindset was helpful? His concentration on performance would inevitably be impaired if it rained – something he could not control.

Before you next act, write down some things you can control, like “body language” and “how confident you are in your role,” and try to focus on that. Avoid giving your attention to things you can’t control – they will only take your mind off what’s important during the game.

Of course, there is more to focusing on the mental side of performance, but these three rules are an excellent foundation. They will help put you on the path to becoming the best soccer player or football player you can be!
