Letting Go
Is there anything you just can’t let go of? Maybe you just missed getting a lucky lottery number. Maybe you were number two in the running for the job you wanted so badly. However, it can also be something much worse, such as losing a child in a car accident. Whatever the situation, if you find yourself haunted by misfortune, or at least the appearance of misfortune, you can take some comfort from the story of Job.
If you have read this book in the Old Testament, you may remember that Job was initially very rich and respected throughout his land. However, God allowed him to face several great calamities, including the loss of property and even the loss of children. No one could adequately explain to him why this had happened to him. He knew in his heart that he was a very good person. He kept asking why him? In the end, he learned a valuable lesson. Although he did not understand why such things were happening to him, it was his duty to trust the God who created the universe.
There was a time in my life when this lesson helped me. My rough experience was my first full-time job. I taught junior high in a public school and did not know how to handle the classroom discipline required. While I made it over a year, my contract was not renewed. What was i supposed to do? Finding a teaching job was hard enough without that blemish on my record. I tried other things like being in the military and working in industry. But in the end, I felt disappointed that I could never use the training and vision I gained in college as a teacher.
I ended up taking the risk of teaching more, but not with teenagers, but with college students. I let go of the idea that I would never teach again. When I worked part-time in college while still working in industry, I found that my industry experience was actually an advantage because I was better able to demonstrate the value of my subject, mathematics, in the real world. I ended up getting full-time college teaching positions that turned out to be quite satisfying for the most part.
It is difficult for you to get rid of some unhappiness in your life. Learn the lesson from the book of Job, trust God and see what He has for you next.
