World Cup 2010 – Which African Team Will Go the Furthest?

8 years ago, when the World Cup finals were held in Asia for the first time, minnows South Korea defied all expectations to become the first Asian team to reach the semi-finals of one of the biggest sporting events in the world. In 2010, the World Cup was held in Africa for the first time. Let’s take a look at the participating African teams. Which of these 6 teams will go the furthest?

South Africa

The South African football team will be one of the best-supported teams in the tournament as they host the current edition of the quadrennial tournament. With star striker Benni McCarthy out of the squad due to poor form and fitness, Bafana Bafana will rely heavily on captain Aaron Mokoena and skilful midfielder Steven Pienaar, who has just had a fantastic season with Everton.

Algeria

Algeria may not boast any truly world-class stars, but they are in no rush with the likes of Portsmouth’s Nadir Belhadj, Wolfsburg’s Karim Ziani and Rangers’ Madjid Bougherra some of their key players.

Cameroon

Cameroon have been one of the most exciting teams in previous World Cups and this time they have one of the best strikers in the world in Samuel Eto’o. Other players to watch out for are midfielder Jean Makoun and Arsenal’s Alexandre Song.

Ivory Coast

Not only do Ivory Coast have arguably the best squad of any African team, they are also managed by former England manager Sven Goran Eriksson. World class players like Kolo Toure, Emmanuel Eboue, Didier Zokora, Yaya Toure, Salomon Kalou and of course Dider Drogba. However, 2 main factors stand in the way of Ivory Coast. Drogba’s recent arm injury and the fact that they have been drawn in a group of death that includes favorites Brazil and Cristiano Ronaldo led Portugal. Can they finish in the top 2 in this group?

Ghana

With Ghana’s best player Michael Essien out through injury, their hope for glory rests with midfielder Sulley Muntari.

Nigeria

Nigeria is one of Africa’s most successful teams and their squad this time around includes the likes of Everton’s Joseph Yobo and Yakubu Aiyegbeni, Marseille’s Taye Taiwo, veteran striker Nwankwo Kanu, Fulham’s Dickson Etuhu and Wolfsburg’s Obafemi Martins.

Which of these teams will be the most successful? On paper, Ivory Coast have the best line-up, but essentially they will be competing with Portugal for 2nd place in the group. With Drogba out, can they meet Ronaldo’s team?

So my money will be on Nigeria and Cameroon who should have no trouble qualifying from their groups.
