Although there is often some degree of seasonal variation, many plants and animals accept a predictable daily rhythm and generally live by it. As humans, we have largely gotten away from this habit. But at the most basic level, our physiology is highly attuned to—and encouraged by—a certain sense of regularity. Food is no exception to this regularity.

Here are some simple reasons why you are not losing weight and how Ayurveda can help:

You are not eating the right foods. Eat foods that meet your needs.

You eat little. The concept is simple: eat more of the right food. You’re probably thinking, “Eat more to lose weight”? That sure can’t be right.” It may seem counterintuitive, but if you really aren’t eating enough of the right foods, you most likely can’t lose weight.

When you eat is more important than what you eat. In North America, people eat 5-6 small meals a day, whereas with an Ayurvedic diet, you eat three meals a day at the same time every day. You eat your biggest meal at noon. This principle is to align your eating habits with nature. The sun is at its highest point at noon, which is a sign for the body. In America, we eat the biggest meals for dinner. Many times just a few hours before bed.

You are eating too much of the wrong food. Sometimes it’s important to eat less. If you have poor digestion or have a habit of eating when you are not really hungry, you will need to eat less. In Ayurveda, different amounts of food are needed at different times depending on your health. If you over-consume the wrong food, it will be more difficult to lose weight.

You are stressed. Does stress play a bigger role in your daily life than you would like? For many of us, the answer to this question is an unequivocal YES! Stress is a fairly universal aspect of the modern human experience, and while some stress is acceptable, even productive, we now understand that too much stress can be quite harmful and can compromise our health physically, mentally, and emotionally. Ayurveda brings a beautiful perspective on managing stress, especially at mealtimes. Do not engage in a stressful environment while eating. Eat in a peaceful and beautiful environment. If you’re at work, don’t eat at your desk or in your car. Go out and sit in the park! Also use meditation and breathing exercises to reduce stress.

You exercise too much. In fact, we may be doing more harm than good. If we haven’t fueled our bodies properly, exercise can be quite stressful, causing an overproduction of cortisol (the stress hormone) which often causes weight gain.

You don’t sleep enough. You guessed it: lack of sleep or not seeing at the right time doesn’t just affect our mood and concentration. Not getting enough sleep or going to bed too late can really affect your ability to maintain a healthy weight. Plus, when you’re tired, your body actually releases more hormones that make you feel hungry. This again means that you think you need food when your body doesn’t actually need it.

You like to drink cold water. Drink only ½ cup of warm water with meals. Never drink cold water.

So what are the solutions?

In Ayurveda, digestion is the root of all diseases and conditions. When you eat the wrong food at the wrong time or fail to follow any of these examples, you cause the food to be improperly digested. When food is improperly digested… “AMA” is produced. Ama is the precursor of most diseases.

Make sure you eat enough. Rather than counting calories and focusing on that, focus on stocking up on fresh produce, whole grains, lean protein, and drinking plenty of water so you don’t accidentally eat when you’re actually just dehydrated. Also, get enough sleep.
