The Evolution of Soccer Games

With the confirmation that EA Sports will release “2010 FIFA World Cup” on April 27, franchises like “Sensible Soccer” and “International Superstar Soccer” are almost forgotten. This article and accompanying video were created in pure appreciation and to allow you to relive some of the defining games of the genre. So far in terms of advancement in soccer games, FIFA 10 is probably the best soccer title around, although many fans of Pro Evolution Soccer (PES) would have something to say about that. There have been a number of groundbreaking titles in the past and others that are better off forgotten.

Sensible Soccer, Ultimate Soccer, Super Soccer and Italia 90 were some of the first titles to encapsulate soccer fans around the world. For me it was Italia 90 that kicked it off despite a number of horrendous glitches such as being able to score easily from the edge of the box every time, but that was only a small problem in a game that started competitive gaming for me. at just five years old with my older brother. Brazil and Italy were inevitably the best teams in a game played from a bird’s eye view. But overall, among my friends and the consensus in the wider gaming community, Sensible Soccer was the king of the early days and created an undeniable dynasty in gaming. “Sensi” topped charts like Amiga Power.

FIFA International Soccer was released in July 1993 and brought soccer games into the 16-bit era, and it is known that a player could run away from the referee when he received a yellow card, but play did not resume until the referee caught up with him, which would mean. lead to a straight red card for the incident. Released in 1994, Sensible World of Soccer was a first in video games to attempt to encompass the entire world of professional soccer in a single title, with career modes that included both player and manager roles, as well as numerous club and national teams, many of which were a bit strange. Don’t take anything for granted, it even made the New York Times list of the ten most important video games of all time.

FIFA 96 represented arguably the greatest advancement in the genre in the 1990s; Silicon Graphics, modeled players using MotionDesign animation technology. New moves included 1-2 passes, quick dribbles, volleys, dummies, fakes and nutmegs – the beginnings of the modern game. The game features real players with real attributes. FIFA 97 offered very little innovation apart from the indoor arena, something I had hoped would reappear over the last 13 years. FIFA Road to World Cup 98 was next and set the benchmark in graphics and gameplay for soccer games to follow, but it took a long time for EA Sports to re-emerge as the top franchise it is today.

Personally speaking, International Superstar Soccer 64 (ISS 64) was the best soccer game ever and it is important to mention the N64 controller. It brought an authentic arcade feel to your sofa and an inexplicable competition between your friends, everyone had to be the best. Realism wasn’t what made this game so good, the fact that it lacked licenses didn’t matter, David Beckham was called Decham, Alan Shearer was Shoarer, none of that was a problem, just something fun. The fluid gameplay and element of tangible skill between players made it a huge success. Anyone remember the “Z” button for curling? You could click from left to right. ISS 98 soon followed and was equally highly regarded, although unfortunately there were still no official licenses.

This is Football (TIF) 2003 offered an alternative to more FIFA-like gameplay and had potential, but in reality you’d be mad to pick this or its successor TIF 2005 over any PES title, for me I’d rather play the original PES over one of these . The franchise died suddenly.

Pro Evolution Soccer 1,2,3,4,5 or 6, take your pick, they were all amazing in their own right. A strong follow-up to what ISS 98 left behind, it dominated most fans of the genre for nearly a decade. While it was still lacking in almost all licenses, FIFA struggled to match the freedom and fluidity of the Pro Evolution series. PES had its flaws as a realistic game, but why should it be realistic? What also made it so great was the players fitness before the game, smileys indicating what percentage of their potential a player could play which could affect your game! My style was just dribbling with very little passing; highly unrealistic if I’d run it past 10 players, but everyone had their own play style. Some were reserved and patient, others more full-on and attack-minded, others sat and played on the break, but the great thing is that all styles worked. Maybe I’m sticking my neck out, but I believe the PES franchise has created the most intense competition between friends than any other game in history, or if you disagree, certainly in football, and a lot of that was down to how diverse it was.

The reinvention of EA Sports was most evident with FIFA 09, the game that turned many a Pro Evo’s head. PES 6 and 2009 didn’t improve enough for the opportunities offered by the next generation. The simple reality was that EA Sports had finally cracked an enjoyable, smooth, well-rounded game, and it made it harder to be good at, which is another thing Konami did so well. The release of PES 2010 pretty much confirmed this shift for me, yes there are improvements in the game but I was turned around which I never thought I would say. Introducing 360 dribbling, new usable skills, formations, licenses, graphics, ultimate team and above all, what is important nowadays, the power of online play that PES is sorely missing.

There you have it, the evolution of football games, and you could say that Konami were Charles Darwin, but EA Sports are the scientists who will make the biggest advances in the genre.

If you disagree in any way, if there is a game that deserves a mention or you want a game, feel free to comment.
