German Expressionism – The Art of Revolution

The beginnings of the expressionist art movement are attributed to artists from Germany who worked between the world wars. Many of the soldiers who fought in the trenches of World Was I were artists, or were about to make their mark as artists, as the horrors of war sought an outlet for their memories. These earliest works showed equal disdain for the slaughter of human beings on the front lines and for the bourgeois elite who sat at home patting themselves on the back for a job well done.

When the war was lost in 1918, the corrupt monarchy of William II. was overthrown and hope blossomed in the streets of Germany and the people breathed in the sweet scent of a new beginning with all its intoxicating promises. In this climate, activist groups flourished, calls for democracy and communism, and right-wing regimes also filled the streets.

Artists of this time formed their own groups and called on other artists to support the Provisional Government; the expressionists formed the Arbeitsrat fur Kunst, or Workers’ Council for Art. They worked closely with the Novembergruppe, which was formed under the name and influence of the November Revolution, a series of events culminating in the abdication of Emperor Wilhelm II. 9 November 1918 and the establishment of a parliamentary republic. These groups invite all artists, sculptors, painters, architects, writers and composers to come together and build a new society.

The right-wing quickly moved in to oppose them, the same people who formed the core of the Nazi regime, who had prominent socialist leaders arrested and murdered. It took them a year to plan a coup to capture Berlin’s government buildings. The move ultimately failed when 12 million German workers staged a general strike that drove the right from power. However, it was at this time that the National Socialist German Workers’ Party was founded, one of the most active and vocal members of this party was Adolf Hitler.

During this era of the fascist rise to power, artists worked hard to disparage them and their principles, creating works that expressed a bleak future and emphasized the need for change. Although some artists sought to escape the current political climate in their work, producing portraits, landscapes or religious works, all felt that oppression was beginning to recede.

When the Nazis came to power, artists lost whatever status they had as teachers or painters, were forbidden to exhibit or create, many went into exile as their contemporaries were arrested and killed. Thousands of works of art were removed from public view in museums and galleries in Germany, then the Nazis turned the power that artists once wielded against them by creating their own exhibition of the same artist’s work. This they called Entartete Kunst: Degenerate Art. As part of the exhibition, they mocked the works by hanging them incorrectly, obliquely and perversely decorating them with Nazi flags and insignia.

The artists themselves were, the Nazis claimed, insane, Jewish and communist, and morally deficient. They succeeded in creating an end to art in Germany only as long as they were in power, for after the liberation of the country many artists, some of whom had established successful careers in other countries, returned and resumed their posts as teachers in academies and art schools, and continues to produce great works of art.
