Think about what you usually do before you hit the golf course with your friends. Driving your kids across town to soccer practice? Still sleepy from that bad night’s rest you had? Are you all high on 6 cups of coffee? Are you as nervous as a cat in a room full of rocking chairs because you chili dipped a ball? There is no doubt that you are in a certain state of mind before you start playing golf. And more often than not, I’d be willing to bet my book signed by Ben Hogan that it’s a bad frame of mind.

I know you have a busy life. But the key is to get in the right frame of mind before you step onto the first tee. How are you doing it? Let me just say that it is not always easy and it takes practice to get into the right frame of mind. So don’t get frustrated or disappointed in yourself if it takes a while. Remember, this is a game and it’s meant to be fun. Why else would you be out there paying big bucks to hit a little white ball into a little tin cup?

The first thing is to find out where your head is at least half an hour before the round starts. Are you angry with your boss, frustrated with the kids? Did you just have an argument with your partner or did some crazy person just try to lead you astray? Are you nervous because you ran over the ball or are you playing with your friends for big money? All of these things affect you and your game. The pros know this, and so should you.

So what are some things you can do to get yourself in the right frame of mind? For me, the key is to be relaxed, confident and have positive energy flowing through my body. Maybe you are a little different. My question to you is how did you feel inside when you played your best golf? Think about it and go back to that time and place. All was right with the world for you, wasn’t it? But what was right about it? How did you feel? Were you relaxed? Were you confident? did you have fun Did you trust your golf swing? Did you enjoy golf partners?

Here are some of the things I noticed about myself when I played my best laps:

“I felt excited to play and in the back of my mind I might have been nervous

“I was happy to play golf with my friends and I wasn’t worried that they might laugh at me if I cut the ball.”

“I felt a sense of peace inside that could not be shaken

“I felt confident, energized and happy to be out on the golf course amidst tree-lined fairways and beautifully manicured greens.

“I felt at ease and joked around with my golf partners

“I felt the magic of life and knew instinctively that I was going to hit the golf ball clean.”

“My mind wasn’t busy with a million thoughts, instead there was concentration and silence

“My body felt relaxed, rested and healthy

“I was, for lack of a better word, in the zone.

Let’s say you’re a nervous wreck with eighteen million thoughts, mostly negative, running through your head. How do you get from point A, a caring wart, to point B, a focused golfer? Again, if this is your normal pre-golf state, don’t expect to change it overnight. It’s a process.

First, determine what is the norm for you. Are you usually just rushing out of work to go play golf with your mind somewhere else? Or is it that you have been struggling with your game and fear is almost paralyzing you? Identifying your state of mind before playing golf is key. I don’t want to get all psychological on you, but golf is a very mental game! There is no cure golf gizmo or one right way to swing the club. Even if it were, your mind would interfere.

If you’re having trouble identifying what you’re feeling or how you’re feeling before golfing, then your first step is to pay attention to yourself. This can be difficult. Sometimes we are so busy in our daily lives that it seems there is no time to stop and look at ourselves. One way to find out what your feelings or thoughts are is to be quiet for 5 minutes. Listen and learn.

I’ve noticed that when I’m tired, nervous, or in a rush, I generally tend to play golf poorly. I’ve gotten to the point in my game where I can usually shake those feelings or state of mind before a round starts. And with a little practice, you’ll learn it too. I still feel challenged when I feel out of sync or rhythm. It’s like some uncoordinated teenager has taken over my body and wreaked havoc on my game. Those are the rounds where I do my best to stay focused and play the safe game. I know I’m not going to break any records, but I also know I’m not going to spend the day in the woods hunting for a golf ball!

Here are some ideas for getting into a different state of mind:

Listen to your favorite music

Pay attention to your golf partners

Do something nice for someone else

Sing or hum a tune

Imagine your best round of golf

Think of your best memories in life

Talk to a good friend

Tell jokes

Laugh

Think

Visualize mastering challenging holes

Walk around the playground and notice your beautiful surroundings

Think about the times when you felt most confident

So how do you get from one state, let’s say rushed, to a more relaxed calm state? I’ve had moments where I’ve run 90mph before golf and my mind has kept up with my body. I know if I keep up this pace my golf game will suffer. I use whatever trick works at the time. Taking a deep breath is always a good place to start. Swinging the club between your fingertips at a slow, easy pace can be soothing and builds momentum. Seeing the beauty of a golf course can be relaxing and uplifting, especially when I’m caught in a traffic jam. You will have to practice what works for you. One thing that always gets me in the zone is replaying one of my best laps in my mind along with the feelings I had. I can’t help but smile and feel good.
