After centuries of bad press, the world’s favorite pick-me-up is finally getting some recognition. New studies show that coffee may actually be good for you.
Although it has been blamed for everything from impotence to cancer, coffee is undoubtedly the stimulant of choice for billions of people around the world. Although the US is 12th on the per capita consumption list, it is the largest national consumer, with 80% of Americans drinking coffee, according to the National Coffee Association. In fact, the average American drinks 3.4 cups each day, which is a whopping 146 billion cups per year.
Coffee has always been controversial. It is the only drink ever to receive official papal support (in the 1600s Pope Clement VIII declared coffee a Christian drink), but in late 17th-century England, a widespread Women’s Petition Against Coffee declared it an “abominable and pagan liquor” and blamed it on for turning husbands into eunuchs.
In the 20th century, coffee was more popular than ever, but studies seemed to reveal some scary links between the drink and several serious diseases, including heart attacks, birth defects, osteoporosis and cancer.
But new research shows that a fragrant cup of java doesn’t have to be a guilty pleasure. It now appears that many of the coffee studies from the 1970s and 1980s were flawed, and coffee is not the diet demon it was once thought to be. Not only that, but it appears that moderate consumption can actually be beneficial.
Coffee can help protect the liver from the effects of alcohol. In a Kaiser Permanente study, heavy drinkers who consumed four cups of coffee per day reduced their risk of liver cirrhosis by 80%.
Coffee May Prevent Type 2 Diabetes A Harvard School of Public Health study found that men who drank more than six cups of coffee a day were 50% less likely to develop type 2 diabetes. Women who drank six or more cups a day reduced their risk by 30%.
Coffee can help prevent gallstones. A 10-year Harvard study of more than 46,000 men showed that those who drank at least two cups a day were 40% less likely to develop gallstones.
Coffee may help prevent Alzheimer’s disease. Research in Finland and Sweden shows that moderate coffee consumption in middle age can significantly reduce the risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease or dementia in the elderly. Study participants who drank 3 to 5 cups a day had a 65% to 70% lower risk of dementia and a 62% to 64% lower risk of Alzheimer’s disease.
