Mindset = Being Organized
I think we can all agree that we hate clutter. We hate it so much we pretend it doesn’t exist. Sometimes we even hide from the world because we are afraid of what others might think of us because of it. Fortunately, being disorganized or having a cluttered home that we don’t like to admit is something we can overcome. From experience, it just takes patience, vulnerability and an open mind to achieve what we want in our homes and in our lives.
Today I’m going to give you 5 simple and modern tips to change your thinking to become better organized.
TIP #1: Start small
For some reason, our brains are wired to believe that we HAVE to complete an entire project at once. Have you ever wondered why none of your tasks or projects are ever completed on time? I bet one of the reasons could be because the project you took on was a BIG one to complete and because you were so overwhelmed that you couldn’t finish it. No longer! By starting small, whether it’s organizing your pen cup to finishing a big project, you’ll avoid the stress of completing the task and find that you get the job done quickly and accurately.
TIP #2: Listen to organizing podcasts
One of the best things you can do in the morning or while driving is to stimulate your mind by listening to things that stimulate your mental and physical growth. I have noticed in my own life and others around me that it has made a world of positive changes in our lives. Organizing podcasts like Organize 365 or Slob comes clean there are 2 podcasts that have kept me motivated during times when I was lacking. One of the secrets to truly changing your lifestyle is changing your mentality, and incorporating these simple methods into your life will get you there in no time.
TIP #3: Create a checklist
It may sound like a cliché, but to-do lists really work – of course only if you use them. As I mentioned above, clutter is a bi%#* and to fight it you will have to engage it directly in small intervals. Here are 2 examples of how checklists can effectively help you stay organized. 1) Using a checklist to plan the tasks you need to do at home after work will prevent you from getting overwhelmed after a stressful day 2) An effective checklist will only include your priority tasks so you’ll know exactly what needs to be done to stay organized . Checklists, lists, to-do lists, plans, whatever you want to call them, is a habit that needs to be established in your life so that organizing and staying organized can become second nature.
TIP #4: Keep the things you really love
Here are some common responses I’ve heard on this topic:
I love everything in my house and there is no way I am getting rid of anything! All my things have meaning! It’s better here. I spent so much money and I haven’t even worn it yet! – But it’s been 2 years already…
These are just a few examples of what my clients have said to me when I advise them to keep only the things they truly love in their home. Let me explain what this really means. Let’s start with an example. We love our family (our immediate family) and while we may have favorites (wink), we love them so unconditionally that we couldn’t live a day without them. That’s the kind of feeling I think you should have for things in your home. You love your pen so much; the mere thought that it is not in your possession is utter chaos. If you don’t feel this way about things in your home, then it’s probably time to part ways with them. I will be happy to witness the separation!
TIP #5: Make it a habit
New studies show that it takes 2-8 months to form a new habit. I know this seems like an abnormal amount of time – at least to organize, but it’s actually great news. Creating new habits should not be seen as one and should be done more as a process that will lead to a better outcome. Committing to an organizational system and practicing it thoroughly, even though you may have hiccups, will create a positive mindset and improve your organizational skills.
