Cricket Self-Talk
Soliloquy
Self-talk, also known as internal dialogue, is simply the way you talk to yourself in your head. You agonize over a bad shift, congratulate yourself on a good result, even think about how hot you look in crisp, clean whites. People do it every day, but it’s mostly negative. Most people use too much low-energy self-talk. Blame yourself, punish yourself. “I’m not good enough,” “I’m too tired,” “I’m not capable.” This low-energy speech is one of the main causes of poor performance. If you say something to yourself often enough, you start to believe it. It may not be true, but you will surely believe it.
High energy words support high energy thoughts, and unlike low energy words, you can use high energy words until your thoughts and emotions change for the better. Then your cricket becomes a positive, high-energy experience.
If you have a negative belief, you have negative self-talk that will confirm the negative belief, and so it goes on. You need to be aware of your inner dialogue. While positive thinking may not always work, negative thinking almost always does. Put aside all self-pity and take responsibility for change. If the voice you’re using doesn’t support you, change it.
A big problem for athletes is repeated ruminating over poor performance. This memory leads to negative self-talk along with emotional discomfort. Your mind may then remember similar bad events. Allowing the past to affect you instead of focusing on the present will only slow you down. You suffer from tight muscles, loss of energy, poor coordination, all of which contribute to poor performance.
Be kind to yourself by talking to yourself in a positive way. Make mental images of yourself that you are a complete success. Watch yourself take those goals, hear the congratulations of your teammates and the applause of the spectators, and feel how good it feels to train for victory. Mental rehearsal is the next best thing to being truly successful, so do it as often as you can and repeat it with positive self-talk. You will be delighted to see these improvements.
What do you say to yourself when something goes wrong?
What do you say to yourself when faced with a challenge?
The secret is that a confident cricketer will talk to himself differently than one who lacks that confidence, even if they are performing equally well. Playing with confidence gives you the confidence to enjoy every minute and this will reflect in your game. Without this trust, another player can always feel unprepared, nervous, indecisive. These thoughts then reinforce these beliefs. So you see how vitally important confident, positive self-talk is.
Self-talk after a good performance:
Confident Cricketer – A cricketer lacking confidence
I’m like that. It was luck.
I always act like that. It was a one-off
I’ll be the same next time. I can’t do it again.
Self-talk after poor performance:
Confident Cricketer – A cricketer lacking confidence
It was luck. I’m like that.
It was a one-off. I always act like that.
I can’t do it again. I’ll be the same next time.
Research tells us that a ratio of three or four positive thoughts to every negative one contributes to better performance. Track the positive or negative thoughts you have about yourself so you can change your negative thinking to a more positive outlook. Any problem you’ve ever had, if you think about it in the future, how will it make you feel?
Positive affirmations (self-statements) will help you feel more confident, but for these affirmations to work effectively, they must be inspirational and practical. Bragging statements like “I’m the best goalkeeper” or “no one can mix like me” become banana peels because they don’t work in the real world and are actually fruitless, distracting, and end up making you look silly. Worse, you lose confidence and give up using affirmations.
Use affirmations like “I am ready and prepared to…” repeated slowly and thoughtfully can lead to calmness, which gives you a positive mindset and leads to clear thinking and good judgment.
