A Fantastic History and Series of Exciting Developments Beckon the Evolution of Jewellery

Jewelry is an indispensable part of human culture. It has graced the human race since time immemorial. For thousands and thousands of years it has been a form of expression, wealth and status. With the evolution of man, jewelry has also evolved. In the past, flowers, shells, beads and bones were used to make jewelry. As time went on, metals were shaped and tamed with jewelry designs. Soon the technology developed and gradually more complex designs were developed.

The development of jewelery can be broadly divided into three civilizations i.e. Egypt, India and China. The Egyptians laid a solid foundation for metallurgy, gem collecting and glass making. They were trendsetters in unique jewelry. On the other hand, Indians have made jewelry an integral part of their daily life and religion. They were the first to invent and control the art of gold. It was this unique set of skills that became the driving force behind the incredible expansion of European civilization during the Age of Discovery. China slowly focused on making jewelry inspired by nature, animals and dragons, which gradually became popular throughout Asia, becoming the pioneers of creativity.

Jewelry Timeline:

110,000 – 73,000 BC – Sea shells were used as amulets. Traces of seashell jewelry have been found in Morocco, Israel, Algeria and South Africa.

38,000 BC – Beads made from animal remains were found in France.

28,000 BC – Petrified shells and ivory beads discovered in the Czech Republic.

4400 BC – The Thracian civilization produced objects made of gold.

5000- 30 BC – This marked the era of copper jewelry. Glazed beads and costume jewelry became popular during this period. Gemstones like amethyst, turquoise, carnelian and feldspar have been used to make unique fashion jewelry.

2750 – 1200 BC – Ancient Mesopotamia produced jewelry inspired by grapes, cones, and spirals. Precious stones such as Agate, Jasper and Carnelian were used.

1400 – 30 BC – Greek jewelry was synonymous with fashion jewelry as it was set with rare gems such as emeralds and based on animal and shell designs.

500 BC – 400 AD – Snake jewelry was created during this era. The Romans inherited signet rings, brooches, amulets and talismans that were etched with sapphires, emeralds, garnets and diamonds.

400 – 1000 AD – In the European Dark Ages, jewelry was inherited only by royalty.

1066 – 1485 AD – In the Middle Ages, jewelry became popular again as it was more focused on religion. The most popular designs were hair and cloth jewelry worn during religious ceremonies. Jewelery in this age was set with precious and semi-precious stones.

1500 -1830 – The arrival of the Renaissance and the Georgian period brought the rise of jewelry. Necklaces and earrings of various designs were made. It was during this era that diamond jewelry was the ultimate fashion jewelry and was paired with evening party ensembles.

1835 – 1900 – During the reign of Queen Victoria, costume jewelry developed in Europe.

Early 20th Century – Art Nouveau and Edwardian styles were the evolution of this period.

1920 – 1935 – The 1920s marked the beginning of Art Deco, which introduced brightly colored jewelry full of geometric shapes, abstract patterns, cubism, modernism, and oriental art. Wrist watches were also worn in these years.

1939 – 1949 – This was the period of World War II. During this time, metal-based jewelry designs with patriotic motifs and semi-precious and synthetic gems were created.

1950s – The post-war years saw the return of brightly colored jewelry. Rhinestones and large beads were used. Diamonds have claimed their place as the most popular gemstone.

From the 17th century – after the 17th century, jewelry no longer remained a symbol of social status. Gold and silver jewelry was also available for the lower classes. Jewelry began to adopt floral designs and animals with unique colored gems and metals. This trend continued into the early 20th century and included intricate glass creations. The Industrial Revolution stimulated jewelry fashion; and trends were changing faster than ever. In particular, jewelry made in the Art Nouveau, Edwardian, Art Deco and retro periods is still popular today.

The present and beyond – Jewelry today represents an artistic expression. The technological revolution has made jewelery accessible and affordable. Synthetic gems have replaced highly valuable and prized gemstones. Design and creativity were now central. Jewelry stores display each piece in such a way that it charms the customer and entices them to make an immediate purchase.
