ICC World Cup 2011 Semi-Finals: Probable Pakistan Team Against India
Mohali will host the second semi-final of the 2011 ICC World Cup between India and Pakistan. During this year’s mega event, when South Africa took on the Netherlands, only one other match was played here in a B-League match.
That match started in overcast conditions and the Dutch seamers were given some purchase as the Proteas slipped to 58/2 in the 16th over. As the game wore on, the wicket loosened and Smith’s men amassed 351/5 on the back of contrasting hundreds from Amla and De Villiers.
Interestingly, the spinners came into play as Holland chased under lights and Imran Tahir took 3 wickets and Peterson 2 as Holland collapsed to 120 all out.
Spinners of course hold the key and Pakistan have to take that into consideration while picking the team. Their fast bowlers include Umar Gul, Wahab Riaz and Shoaib Akhtar. Razzaq is also a bowling option that Afridi can rely on. While Umar Gul was outstanding, Razzaq chipped in with the occasional wicket. Riaz has been less than impressive while Akhtar seems to have fallen out of favor after the knock he took against New Zealand.
Pakistan has three leading spinners, in Afridi, Rehman and Ajmal. Hafeez is number four and Afridi considers the opening batsman to be his team’s best all-rounder. Hafeez justified his captain’s faith in him with a spell of 2/16 against West Indies in the quarter-final. He followed that up with an unbeaten 61, in his side’s successful chase.
The following players will be self-selected: Mohd Hafeez, Kamran Akmal, Asad Shafiq, Younis Khan, Misbah-ul-Haq, Umar Akmal, Shahid Afridi, Abdul Razzaq, Umar Gul, Saeed Ajmal.
So there is only one player left to pick, from among Abdul Rehman and Wahab Riaz. Riaz took 0/29 from 6 overs against the Carribeans. He took 4 goals from 3 matches earlier in the tournament; overall, in ODIs, Riaz has taken 26 wickets in 17 games and has an economy rate of over 5 per over.
There is not much difference in the success of Riaz and Rehman; the latter played in 5 of his side’s 6 league games and scored 3 goals. Rehman’s ODI career of 20 matches produced 15 wickets; where he scored against Riaz is in his economy rate which is 4.31 overall and 4.42 in this World Cup. But his World Cup average of 66.3 per wicket contrasts unfavorably with Riaz’s average of 37.33.
Pakistan will be looking for wickets rather than restrictions against India’s batting powerhouse and Rehman’s claim for the spot is thus weakened. Moreover, Riaz with his left-arm medium speed gives the team variety in its bowling armoury.
