United Kingdom Vs India: The COVID-19 Vaccine Vexation!

In the recent cricket Test series between England and India, the score 2-1 in favor of the visitors is still completely in the balance due to the fact that several non-playing members of the India team have tested positive for COVID-19, meaning that the fifth and final Test had to be called off only India’s fault, even though not a single member of the playing team contracted the infection. Now, the change in travel regulations for Indians visiting the UK could be the lack of a cricket curtain, meaning Indians fear they are more susceptible to acquiring or spreading the COVID-19 virus and its variants; that India is the source of the more infectious Delta variant, which again mutates into Delta Plus; and perhaps also that the handling of the second wave of the pandemic in India was disastrous. In principle, therefore, the English can feel insecure about vulnerable Indians roaming their territories after they have managed to live with the virus and have opened everything, including cricket stadiums, to crowds without even the need for masks. They conveniently forget the basic truth that a vaccine breakthrough is possible even for fully vaccinated people everywhere in the world, not just in India.

What the UK government has done is very wrong, unexpected and absurd: that Indian travelers, regardless of whether they are vaccinated or not, will have to undergo at least two RT-PCR tests and must be quarantined for 10 days upon arrival. Apart from unnecessary inconvenience and exorbitant costs, especially for Indian students going there to study, this basically means that vaccines in India are fake and a fully vaccinated person in India becomes ‘unvaccinated’ once they arrive in the UK. Why? India’s Covishield vaccine is actually a UK-licensed product, an officially valid version of their home-grown AstraZeneca vaccine developed by Oxford University, and more significantly, India previously exported millions of doses of Covishield to their country. The all-Indian vaccine Covaxin has been shown to be as effective as any other vaccine in the world in preventing at least a serious form of illness and hospitalization.

The Government of India and the Ministry of External Affairs have already lodged a strong protest with the UK government terming the measure as discriminatory and have also warned against taking reciprocal action. If not resolved, it will seriously damage the healthy bilateral relations between the two countries. The UK Foreign Office has assured India that it will look at it again, but the discriminatory regulations are yet to be lifted. The World Health Organization (WHO) also reprimanded the UK for such actions. However, it is the WHO that has not yet approved either Covishield or Covaxin for emergency use worldwide, despite the former being linked to the approved AstraZeneca and the latter being proven safe and effective. This raises a fundamental question about the authenticity of drug regulatory authorities in different countries: are all regulatory authorities country-specific and not applicable to other regulatory authorities? This absurd situation must change, if only to properly respect the medical scientists and professionals who work tirelessly in the vaccine production and approval process as soon as possible. And Indians figure prominently in the number of medical scientists or experts involved in this process worldwide, apart from the fact that India has been the world’s largest supplier of vaccines.

Earlier there was discussion of “vaccination nationalism”; now, as the situation demands, we will have to discuss the “vaccine superpower” syndrome and the inequalities that arise from it, with one bloc denying or not recognizing the other. For example, Russian and Chinese vaccines have not yet been accepted worldwide without WHO approval. Former US President Donald Trump seems to still have the upper hand as during his last year in office he went all out to develop cutting-edge messenger RNA (mrna) vaccines, namely Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna, which are available for use across the globe. However, developing countries like India and other poor countries cannot afford these vaccines due to very high prices and storage difficulties. Finally, WHO has to deal with such worrisome issues because it has previously made international sharing of finished vaccines mandatory for all countries.

The UK’s absolutely wrong and discriminatory measures, almost redolent of racism, must be revoked as soon as possible and the WHO must speed up the process of approving Indian vaccines and other proven vaccines of the world. The priority should be the complete liberation of planet Earth from the curse of the pandemic in quick succession, and certainly not rivalry, racism, nationalism and bilateral or international fighting or skirmishes.

According to the latest news, the UK has included Covishield in its list of approved vaccines, which will only come into effect from October 4, 2021. But to add to the confusion, the authorities have refused to accept India’s CoWin vaccine certificates, which means a 10-day quarantine plus tests. continues still for Indian travelers.
