"The El Clasico With Nothing to Play for" or So They Said
The match ended with 4 goals, 8 yellow cards, a red card and a lot of controversy. Pretty explosive on El Clasico without bets.
El Clasico has always been one of the most anticipated football matches between FC Barcelona and Real Madrid, two of the biggest football clubs on the planet. The clash is not limited to the contrasting football styles of the clubs, but is also seen as a clash between Spain and Catalonia. With such importance attached to the match, it has always lived up to the expectations of football fans. Emotions run high on the field as tempers flare and controversies and fights ensue. Sunday’s El Clasico was described as a wet affair even before it started as Barcelona had already won the league while Real Madrid were cautious in their preparations for the Champions League final. The fact that it was Iniesta’s last Clasico was the only reason most fans were looking forward to the football match. There were others who recalled the fact that Barcelona had remained unbeaten during the league and cup seasons so far and a defeat would mean they would not have gone an entire season without defeat.
But all that damp El Clasico talk turned to dust as Barcelona took an early lead through Luis Suarez, who connected perfectly with Sergio Roberto’s cross. Real Madrid equalized early on when Cristiano Ronaldo connected with Benzema’s header which was played in by Toni Kroos. Both teams continued to threaten each other on goal as chances were created left and right. Ronaldo also picked up an injury that kept him limping for the rest of the half. By the end of the 40th minute, two Real Madrid defenders received yellow cards, as did Barcelona’s Messi and Saurez. But the real controversy started when the referee failed to notice Gareth Bale’s terrible challenge on Samuel Umtiti, which should have earned him a straight red card.
Things soon began to heat up as half time approached. There was a clash between Marcelo and Sergio Roberto during Real Madrid’s attack on the left wing. He lost his cool and punched Marcel in the face. The referee had a clear view of this clash and showed Robert a straight red just at the half-time break. This meant that Barcelona had to play the entire second half with one man.
While Barcelona were down to 10 men, Real Madrid had to replace Ronaldo due to his first-half injury which left a swollen ankle. Real Madrid dominated the first half but failed to create many chances. Barcelona took the lead again when Messi scored from Suarez’s pass. The Real Madrid players protested furiously as Saurez fouled Varane in the lead in front of goal but missed. Real Madrid struggled to equalize against 10-man Barcelona and it was Gareth Bale who nodded home to equalize in the 72nd minute.
Barcelona continued to attack as Lionel Messi’s superb effort was beautifully saved by Navas. Messi again came close to scoring as his curling shot went wide of the post. Real Madrid also started using ten-man Barcelona. Marcelo was beaten in the Barcelona box, but the referee again made a controversial call as Real Madrid were given a clear penalty. Providing a clear lifeline, Barcelona continued to resist all Real Madrid’s advances and hung on for dear life. Nelson Semedo brought in Coutinho to take over Roberto’s position in defence, impressed with his speed and stamina. In the end, Semedo cleared the ball with his head as the referee blew the final whistle.
Andres Iniesta’s El Clasico final soon came to life and lived up to expectations. Applause erupted all around as the Maestro took his final bow.
Despite all the controversies and bad refereeing decisions, everyone was happy with the result. Barcelona manager Ernesto Valverde later stated that it would hurt if the unbeaten streak was broken by Real Madrid, so a draw was a fair and acceptable result. As they say, even a draw means undefeated. Anyone who saw Sunday’s El Clasico will agree that the players took to the field as if everything was at stake, despite believing that nothing was.
