Movie The Terminal: Steven Spielberg’s Rare Comedy Flick Rediscovered!

I consider it a happy coincidence that I found this movie called ‘The Terminal’ (2004) directed by Steven Spielberg on a streaming platform. My surprise was immeasurable when I saw the genre written in the details of the film comedy! Well, it may not just be my ignorance of this great filmmaker; as in most Spielberg biographies or filmographies, said film is never highlighted or discussed, even though the film was a commercial success. “Terminal” tells the wonderful story of a character named Viktor Navorski from Eastern Europe (denoting the Russian Republic) who arrives at New York’s John F. Kennedy Airport on a private mission, only to discover that his home (fictional) country of Kakrojhia has undergone a military coup and taken over new government. As the US had not yet recognized the new government, Viktor’s passport became invalid and the airport supervisor took all his documents including his passport, refusing to allow him to enter New York or return home. Viktor Navorski, played by none other than the greatest of actors Tom Hanks, can’t speak much English and goes through a series of hilarious misadventures during his nine-month stay at the terminal. We’ll come back to the movie a bit later.

Watching ‘Jaws’ and ‘Jurassic Park’ was a very exciting experience for most Indians like me and through such films we could understand the grueling effort that often risked one’s own life in a difficult shoot that the director – no doubt – undertook. all this he did his first film experiment at only 12 years old, thus dedicating his whole life to art and making world cinema even richer and more entertaining. After working for several years in the New Hollywood era, which included several TV episodes and smaller films for Universal Studios, he got his game-changing role in 1975, in his early 30s, in Jaws. Spielberg rightfully refused. to make a sequel to ‘Jaws’ because those sequels made by other filmmakers could never match the unique original that still gives chills to this day. In 1997, he made a sequel to ‘Jurassic Park’ called ‘The Lost World-Jurassic Park’ when the author of the original came out with his second book and this film was also a commercial and critical success.

The narrative above somewhat implies that most of us have always considered Spielberg to be a serious filmmaker who has also earned huge commercial success for his universally appealing storytelling and dedicated efforts. We could never have imagined that he could make a film in a lighter comedy genre. Maybe it was just an experiment for this great filmmaker and he did it beautifully too – taking inspiration from a real incident at Paris airport, creating interesting characters including a romantic angle and building a huge movie set in the lines of New York’s JFK airport.

Now, back to Terminal, the 2 hour 9 minute film doesn’t have a single bone-chilling dull moment, with Tom Hanks stumbling along with his brilliantly cultivated broken Russian or Bulgarian English as he manipulates obsessed airport security, security and various officials . His character also gets emotionally involved with a flight attendant played by Catherine Zeta-Jones, an Indian cleaner, a clerk with whom the cafeteria boy was romantically involved, and various other wonderful characters and episodes. Hanks’ character Viktor also helps the native of his region get out of the mess with a clever use of interpretation that tricks the horrified warden. The film also maintains the suspense of what is inside the tin box that Viktor likes to pull out often, and which the warden, who has been trying to get rid of him from either the police or the FBI, is desperate to know. Such delicious elements are better left for all those who would also like to rediscover this comedy-drama film by one of the legendary directors-producers-writers of world cinema.
