Cunard Cruises – Ten Things To Do

This is a rather cheeky look at the things you can do on board a typical Cunard cruise to get your imagination going. Written tongue in cheek, they represent things to laugh at or do on board that you may not have thought of or thought about but never said! Here is:

  • 1 Attend a sailaway party with a camera!

Many people miss this because they are busy getting to know the ship, unpacking and preparing for dinner on the first night. Definitely save these things for later. It’s a great way to check out your fellow travelers, spot likely cruise characters, and meet people. Ask them to take your picture and offer to take others’ pictures. Once the band starts up and the party atmosphere gets going – try the cocktail of the day. Sailboats are always held on the aft pool deck of all 3 ships. The setting and photos from here can be very scenic with the wake of the ship, the setting sun and your final destination disappearing into the distance. Plus, departure party photos are a good gauge of how you looked at the start of your cruise!

  • 2 Treat yourself every morning before breakfast in bed

This is absolute luxury and a great way to wake up in the morning. Fill out your room service card before you go to bed at night and hang it outside your door (room service is FREE). Even if you plan to have breakfast in one of the main restaurants – perhaps order a cup of tea. As we all know, there’s nothing like a cup of tea in bed!

  • 3 Use the spa.

You do not need to book a treatment to use the spa facilities, but there is usually an entrance fee. Instead of booking daily, you can book a Spa Pass for the duration of the cruise to save money on daily admission fees. Since the entrance fee keeps the crowds away, it’s usually a quiet place to relax. It’s worth it, especially if you want to relax in the thermal pool, read a book or play suduko in peace and quiet on a lounger in a fluffy bathrobe. Maybe use the sauna, steam or take one of those invigorating showers. The Canyon Ranch Spa aboard Queen Mary 2 features a large thermal pool with bubbling spring areas and an underwater communal lounger and a separate hot tub pool. The Royal Spas on board the Queen Victoria and Queen Elizabeth have a thermal relaxation chamber with heated sunbeds overlooking the sea. The two sister ships also have free saunas in each of the fitness center locker rooms.

  • 4 Try every bar!

This can be fun as an unofficial bar crawl. This is a challenge on Cunard ships with many bars on board very stylish to suit different moods. That’s for a bit of live entertainment in the evening if you don’t fancy a show – plus it’s not far from home!!! Major drinking establishments include:

  1. The Golden Lion pub serves traditional English Pub Grub, pints, karaoke and pub quizzes at lunchtime.
  2. Commodore Club for the perfect cocktail in a stylish Art Deco setting accompanied by a pianist.
  3. The Chart Room is a great place for a pre-dinner aperitif accompanied by a string quartet.
  4. Veuve Cliquot Champagne bar for real enjoyment.
  • 5 Let yourself be photographed!

This is great for filling the spare moments during the cruise and can be quite entertaining. Photographers around the ship will offer to take your picture before dinner while you are dressed in your finery with no obligation to purchase. There’s usually an ever-changing palette of back pockets to choose from – a mock New York skyline or the Titanic’s grand staircase or a huge picture of a ship to an ornate floral display or just plain white canvas. This then gives you an excuse to look for your picture in the photo gallery (or rogue gallery as we call it). In doing so, you can see everyone else’s picture, which is a great talking point. You can spot who’s traveling who and laugh at some of the pictures that didn’t go well. Play on the bad ones – like a grimace at the wrong time or a palm tree top sticking out of the back of someone’s head.

  • 6 Breakfast and lunch at Britannia Restaurant

Many people prefer to limit the formality of the main restaurant to dinner only – opting for breakfast and lunch in informal buffet restaurants (Lido on Queen Elizabeth & Victoria or Kings Court on Queen Mary 2).. For this reason, Britannia restaurants on Cunard ships are not as busy as usually for dinner and the atmosphere is surprisingly calm. During breakfast and lunch, the Britannia restaurants have an open seating area where breakfast is cooked to order and the lunchtime menu selection is excellent.

  • 7 Gatecrash Cocktail Parties.

This one is a little naughty – but if you’ve ever attended a cocktail party on board, ask yourself, “How many times have you been asked to see your invitation?”

  • 8 Try any free alternative restaurants at night.

Cunard are happy to encourage you to try their alternative dining venues instead of the Britannia Restaurant. Visit the Todd English restaurants on board Cunard’s Queen Mary 2 and Queen Victoria or the Veranda restaurant on board Cunard’s Queen Elizabeth. There is a $30 per person charge for these services. It’s worth checking them out, especially if you’ve received a credit onboard bonus. However – in the part of the buffet restaurants there are also FREE alternative options for evening meals at night. A part of the self-service buffet restaurant in the evening is transformed into a service area with laid tables, tablecloths and menus. These are very good and will give you even more choice of evening meals on board such as Indian, French, Asian fusion, Thai, steak and Italian.

  • 9 Have a sunset cocktail in the hot tub.

Ahhh – Cruise Only! While your fellow passengers are running back to their cabins to get ready for dinner – relax and head to the poolside hot tub instead. Try another of the cocktails of the day and watch the sunset for a relaxed start to a leisurely evening.

  • 10 Visit a nightclub on the second and penultimate night of the cruise.

Most people are too tired to go to a nightclub on the first night of a cruise. But many are tempted to explore the atmosphere on the 2nd night – but if it’s quiet, many don’t return. So take the opportunity to be a night owl for once, put on your dancing shoes and let your hair down. People are much more relaxed at this time of night and it’s a great way to make friends. Similarly, on the last night of the cruise, the nightclub is practically empty as everyone has packed up and is getting ready to leave early in the morning. So the penultimate night of the cruise is when things really get going – inhibitions are thrown aside, dad does a happy dance, requests for favorite tunes abound and it’s the perfect way to celebrate an enjoyable cruise.
