Two Fantastic Ways To Experience The Very North Of New Zealand

Don’t miss out on a trip to New Zealand’s far north if you’re holidaying there. Two fantastic ways to experience the area are two Fullers tours. Cape Reinga Wanderer and ‘Cream Trip’ Supercruise are ideal trips.

The best base is the small coastal town of Paihia. You will set off on the Cape Reinga Wanderer early in the morning, but you will soon discover the magnificent Kauri trees in the Puketi Kauri Forest. A twenty-minute boardwalk allows you to walk past these amazing giant trees. A morning stop for coffee, the restaurant has a stunning spiral staircase carved into a massive Kauri tree.

This tour is tidal, so it can be done in reverse. This tour included a buffet lunch at a pleasant location overlooking the Pacific Ocean. The drive for the last 17 miles is a dirt road, but you will eventually arrive at Cape Reinga at the northern tip of New Zealand. If you walk down to the lighthouse and look out to sea, you can see the meeting of the Tasman Sea and the Pacific Ocean. The resulting clash of waves can be truly spectacular. This area is of great importance to the native Maori. It is the “jumping place” where the spirits of the departed return to their spiritual homeland “Hawaiki”. A Pohutukawa tree on the rocks below marks a place where spirits roam freely.

After leaving Cape Reinga, the tour heads to the expansive Ninety Mile Beach. If you’re brave, you have the option of sand sledding down the giant sand dunes. Ninety Mile Beach stretches along the Tasman Sea side of the area. Watch out for a few abandoned cars that are gradually burying themselves in the sand. Once you reach the lower end of Ninety Mile Beach, the path returns to Paihia through pretty countryside.

The “Cream Trip” Super Cruise is a great way to discover the Bay of Islands. You will sail on a state-of-the-art catamaran and see all the attractions of the area. The spectacular Black Rocks are the first stop. These rocks are unusual volcanic rock formations and can only be found in two places in the world. Fullers stop at many islands to deliver supplies and mail to islanders. Keep an eye out for the abundant wildlife in the area. Part of the journey was accompanied by dolphins.

During the journey there is an extended stay on the beautifully named island of Urupukapuka. My tip is to enjoy one of the scenic walks that give you fantastic views of the numerous islands. The highlight of this tour is a visit to the amazing ‘Hole in the Rock’. Your excitement will grow as conditions permit, the cruiser will fly through the hole.

The catamaran then heads back to Paihia but my tip is to stay on the cruiser and visit the beautiful town of Russell. Take a walk and discover the beautiful church. When you are ready, a small ferry will take you back to Paihia.

This area of New Zealand is well worth the time and effort. Especially when you take these two fantastic ways to experience them.
