Go Fast – Slow Down
I encourage you to work smart, not hard. You might think that less time to work on a project is dangerous. This is the baby boomer mind that belongs to the older generation. Less time better spent is a sure guarantee of better creativity. And in a crowded world, creativity is the competitive advantage you need.
Less time to work on the project does not mean the absence of investment. In reality, it means spending more time mastering the art, more time thinking about the action, and then jumping into the project.
Do it once, do it right.
In business, I meet many people whose way to success is fatigue. They tell me how tired they are and then they have to leave for another meeting. But there are people in that meeting who are not tired. Clients who are relaxed, happy, uncaffeinated, who’s in the back of that meeting?
Do it once – do it right is an important leap from doing it hard.
Achieving a “do it once” strategy requires you to spend a significant amount of time thinking before putting pen to paper. In spiritual parlance we say, “the soul speaks in pictures” – meaning that there must be a slide show of process, production and result in your “mind’s eye” before you act.
See it in my mind before I get off the back.
For me, I consider it a very important part of my life. In any area of life, I know that if I don’t see it, it won’t happen. Sometimes I can’t see it, but I want it. But then I just can’t act because I know that if my soul doesn’t project it, any action is just robotics that I’ll have to do twice.
The clearer the image, the deeper the conviction
Sometimes the images you will have in your mind will be so clear that you will be confused between fact and reality. You’ll think you’re sailing a boat, but you’re actually walking your dog in the snow. Be careful where you do this.
Images come to you, not from you
Inspiration is the art of awakening the mind’s eye. I teach inspiration. Inspiration has three layers.
In – means it comes alive in you
Spirit – means not in material form
Ion – comes from outside
The soul speaks in pictures. It is true. But any picture you conjure up in your head is not a real picture in that sense. Images come to you, not from you. This means that the mind’s eye sees things that you cannot see – so you, the thinker, cannot project a thought into an image and expect it to be a real inspiration from the mind’s eye.
You have to become a receptor. Not the projector
Inspiration comes to you, not from you. That’s why monks, artists and creative people do all kinds of strange rituals. They soften their mind for receptions. You are allowed to claim certain income. For example, you may need an idea for a new marketing campaign. So you can sit or walk with the intention of creating a new idea for a marketing campaign. But that’s all. The idea (it must be in the form of an image) must come to you.
Activities that inspire mental images
There are certain activities that inspire the mind with images. A painter may paint with no real intention of completing the art, he is merely practicing. A composer can play old music that gets lost in the simplicity of familiar territory. A filmmaker could make love. A business tycoon can swim.
Slowing down is the key
Mind images cannot enter the functioning mind. There are many parts of your brain, the highest is concentrated at the top of your skull, there is even a place where you can put your finger and feel a dimple. This place is a receiver of signals. It’s always receiving inspiration, but the other 6 levels of the brain create more noise, so it’s hard to get reception when there’s too much static.
Thinking like learning, worries, emotions, stimulation, fatigue blocks the mind images.
In my workshops, I do exercises that help people calm their minds. I suggest to them that when their minds are quiet, they will have inspiration. I always suggest that if something comes, during this exercise, these people write it down, because nothing can come if we are trying to remember the last thing. (lower part of the brain). There’s always one or two people who complain, “Nothing’s coming” – and that’s really funny because they can’t get out of the habit of reaching out to grab things, they can’t sit back and let the ball come to them.
Let the mind pictures land in your hand.
Mind pictures cannot come to a mind that tries. To catch a ball that is thrown to you, your job is to keep your hand in the general direction of the ball and allow the ball to “find a home” – or rather land in your hand. The universe is filled with vibrations – again in spiritual parlance it is called “Akash” or “Akashic Record” – in ancient times it was spoken of as a great library of all knowledge. The Thinker’s task was to learn how to “shut up” long enough to connect to “AKASH”
It’s a free resource – available to anyone who’s ready
Einstein, Plato, Pythagoras, Shakespeare, Newton, Galileo, Picasso, Miro, Joseph Campbell, Gandhi and anyone else who has left behind something immortal has tapped Akash. Everyone recognized that something happened to them and that caused their genius.
Stupid scientists look for something in the human brain to explain genius, but are stuck in the prison of material reality. Nothing worth thinking about has ever come from us, it only comes to us.
All you have to do is “slow down”
Monks call it enlightenment. Artists call it “drug”. Songwriters call it “a different voice”, mathematicians call it a “moment of inspiration” – branding is diverse, but we must keep it simple. Mind pictures are natural, you get them all the time. All you have to do is “slow down” – This does not mean watching TV. No, that’s called acceleration. Slowing down is doing something you love for the love of it.
For the love of it
To act without desire is to run for the love of running. Walking for the love of walking. Paint for the love of painting. Sing for the love of singing. Dance for the love of dancing. A child can play for love, can you? Without competing with yourself, with others without a goal. I think we have lost this art in life. I work all over the world and the only person I ever met who lived for the love of it was Sri K Patthabi Jois. My yoga teacher in India. He started yoga at the age of 10, practiced for the next 50 years, all those years he had only 10 students in his yoga school (he worked full-time as a university professor to pay the bills) – the only reason he taught and practiced yoga, even at the age of 90 with 500 students paying $350 each for lessons in New York, it was because his “mind’s eye” saw it and he followed it.
Hard work is not good management
Try to catch the ball before you run for a touch down. Try to see the future before you set goals that will cause it. Hard work is bad management. This mind picture means doing it once, right. It means waiting for the ball to come to you. Trust is necessary because sometimes the ball is not thrown. Hold your intention. Spend time learning how to quiet the lower parts of your mind and find activities that allow you to hear what is coming into the higher realms, your mind’s eye.
When I was 5 years old, I stood in front of the class at school, proud of having done my homework, and read to the class from my reading book. I stood there, happy, joyful, that for the first time in my life an image of the mind would come to me. Even in my dreams after my mother died, I saw myself on stage. Here I was on stage for the first time. But, alas, my trousers were homemade and poorly sewn. The stitching was adrift, my little cock shared with the audience. Humiliated, I sat down. It took me 30 years to stand in front of a crowd again. But all the while the image kept repeating itself over and over and over. And now I get paid for it. (minus exposure)
When I was 18 I saw a woman. 6 months later I met her, she was hitchhiking, I was driving. One of my friends picked her up while I was driving, they kissed. It was hard for me to think of any girl other than her. 8 months later I was invited to a party and she was there. A week later we eloped, she moved in, we had children and lived happily ever after. But it ended. One day when I was thinking about the future, she wasn’t in it. I couldn’t see her. Unbeknownst to me, the relationship was over. 3 years later we broke up. Did I create a picture of the future or did I read it?
The last story.
More than 10 years ago, my son came to my workshop. During this program we all did a “mind’s eye” exercise. He joined at the ripe old age of 15 and wrote his picture. He would sail around the world, to the most exotic places, inaccessible by land, showing people the great beauty of the world, the boat would be 120 feet long, he would race in the America’s Cup. This vision was so clear that when he spoke of it, every body saw it in his mind as well. Just 5 years later, everything he saw manifested. What he told me next was profound.
When he saw the image of the future, the only thing that changed in him was that he now knew what to say no to. All possible sailing jobs were offered to him, he turned them down because none of them would lead to that. He knew what to say no to.
There are people who have mastered the art of tapping the great Akasha. He sees the future. This skill is yours if you wish. Learning to tap Akasha means learning to slow down in order to speed up. Learning what to say no to. Learn how to get answers from the outside. These answers do not come from God. They come from a library, a library that is free to all mankind, unconditionally, without expectation of good or value. All, man, woman, child, good, bad, of all religious persuasions can, if they choose, access the Akash and therefore see the answers before they hear them.
