How To Make The Best Advanced Homemade Carp Fishing Boilies!
There is a shocking increase in carp anglers asking why their pre-made baits simply do not live up to the promised catch results! There are many reasons for this, but you can control them all! How can you achieve better than average results when so many anglers are using the same or similar lures as you? This is a big problem and a huge challenge to solve for most of today’s big carp anglers! Read on to discover the answers and expert tips to get your power back right now!
I reached a point of realization years ago where it became clear to me that there was no point in trying to improve the underperforming bait paradigm by dipping baits and glues. I mean of course the bait dough that is extruded and shaped and heated in one way or another into boilies that are used as loose baits or as hook baits!
I was usually short on time so bait making for me was about doing things faster than normal rather than continuing with the old fashioned bait making methods I had been using since the late 1970’s which involved rolling and cooking the dough to make boilies.
The fact that it took so long influenced my decision to cut out steps in the process that I found to be completely pointless. For example, I stopped heating baits and went back to using paste, just like when I started carp fishing in the 1970s when there were no bait companies selling boiled baits and from the days when everyone made their own baits.
Eliminating the bait cooking step gave me a huge immediate improvement in results. I started catching fish when other fishermen around me failed to catch. I also caught a wider variety of carp, from the syndicate water I had fished for about 8 years by then. I noticed that the fish behaved very differently to baits that were not heated. The initial step towards this came from moving away from high protein boilies more towards bird feed and other bait topics as the cost of milk protein went up and up.
This inadvertently led to me using very coarse, soluble and open baits that disintegrated easily in the water. I still made boilies and heated baits that I made from homemade bait dough molds. But around 1992 I stopped using bait rollers and hand made my homemade lures 3 to 4 times the normal size of other anglers. (The normal size of boilies at the time was about 14 millimeters.)
I have made lures anything up to 40 millimeters or larger. I further boiled and dried these baits; but that was the end of the similarity with normal homemade boilies and conventional ready-made boilies. This is because I was making boilies that couldn’t be rolled on the rolling table because they were so sticky or gross or both sticky and gross. I loved these baits and they really transported my catches out of weight compared to the common types of conventional ready made boilies bought these days.
I didn’t have time for bait rolling tables, and I also really disliked the similarities between homemade baits made using rolling tables and machine-rolled ready-made baits; they were just too similar to provide the edges I knew I could use in my homemade lures by making them as different as possible. So I got rid of my bait roller tables, even the very small micro boilie roller tables I owned.
I no longer craved baits that resembled ready made baits. This is because I have found over many years of experience that fish feed very selectively, on an individual basis, using highly developed defensive feeding behavior in the presence of boilies.
Homemade boilies and bought boilies in conventional terms are very similar and the volumes used by the increasing number of anglers joining carp fishing over the years from the 1990’s to the late 2000’s showed me very convincingly indeed that making a rolled homemade boilie was definitely the there is no way to maximize results.
I won’t go into detail here about how I started making my boilies differently, but the big step came in the early 1990s when I was fishing split boilies all the time instead of whole boilies. At that time I also started using PVA rigs of boilies in circles, but using baits that were cut several times. I’ve also used this method for my hook baits because I’ve noticed it produces faster catches and significantly more fish. These things and other observations led me to avoid the bait rolling step altogether.
I have recently discovered very dramatically different bait design paradigms that maximize and optimize baits without heating baits in any way and without making baits designed according to the old fashioned food grade HNV and BNV paradigms.
I have used these paradigms in designing and making my homemade lures for 25 years. But when I became a writer, I found myself in a position where I had to constantly question every single aspect of bait, strip it back to its roots, and re-examine the logic, processes, and thought evolutions that actually ended up mass-editing thousands of anglers. into thinking that’s the way to design, make and use bait!
Just because a large number of people think something doesn’t automatically mean that that thinking is correct and more importantly that it can’t be improved! By becoming a home bait specialist, by testing and constantly examining original research, original testing and breaking old rules and status quo thinking, this has revealed a number of very significant breakthroughs in improving my results.
Part of this came about in 2005 by becoming a central hub for information from home bait anglers around the world and becoming a field tester and consultant for many bait companies. At certain times in the last 10 years I have found myself testing new versions of lures in various forms and making them again, almost every day for months and months for years. The fish feedback from this real bait testing has seriously opened my eyes to new possibilities that are truly better than the whole food bait paradigm.
It goes without saying that few bait makers will be happy to read this, and especially if they are closed minded and stuck in the old fashioned bait thinking of years ago. Sometimes inspiration is needed to change. A couple of years ago I had quite an interesting conversation with John Holt, an angler who deserves enormous respect for his catches. It was with his Grange lure that he started Mainline lures. I had many friends who fished Little Grange in Essex and later in the early 1990s I fished Big Grange next to it.
Those were interesting times and a lot of guys were selling leads back then as a part-time income. I saw Danny Fairbrass, the founder of Korda, visiting his friends at Little Grange. We were all strangers back then, although I might run into Kevin Knight or Zenon Bojko from Mainline or maybe fish with the guy who made lures at the nearby Nash factory, it was all just part of the scene.
I remember discussing lures a few times on the way to Dream Lakes with Zenon and I felt like some of the ideas I was coming up with were a little different than normal. John Holt approached me at the Carp show at Sandown Park a couple of years ago when I was doing my consultant job for CC Moore on the stand explaining aspects of some of the fluids and their options.
This very switched on big fish angler extraordinaire (whose boilies recipe founded Mainline baits) very enthusiastically grilled me about a lot of my ideas and concepts he read about in my articles etc and we had a long chat.
But one thing that really struck me was the look on his face when I asked him why he was still using eggs. To my question, he replied, “Because I always did.”
I could see the lack of logic, emotional attachment and shocking doubt in his mind that he was still using the egg, which really hit him the moment he said it!
