Double Trouble For Adebayor
Adebayor is serving a three-match ban for nailing Dutchman Van Persie to the face for the fourth game in a row against Arsenal. Although Manchester City won 4–2, the victory was marred by Van Persie’s accusation that Adebayor had deliberately kicked him in the face. The three-match ban means Adebayor, also a Togo international, will not be able to play for Manchester City until October 19.
According to an FA statement: ”As part of an expedited disciplinary process, Adebayor has been charged with violent conduct following an incident with Robin van Persie which resulted in an Arsenal player receiving facial injuries.” Referee Mark Clattenburg told the FA that while he was not privy to the incident, if he was, he would have sent Adebayor off.
The boisterous Tozan joined Manchester City on 18 July 2009 after signing a five-year contract for a transfer fee somewhere in the region of £25 million. Adebayor scored on his debut against Blackburn Rovers when he smashed home a shot from 18 yards in the third minute! In his second game, he scored the only goal against Wolverhampton Wanderers as his side won 1–0. In his third league game in a row against Portsmouth, in which Manchester City again won 1–0, he put the ball in the goal. And then came the fourth goal in a row during the fateful match…
Earlier, Emmanuel Adebayor was criticized for celebrating a goal by running the length of the pitch in front of Arsenal fans who nearly stormed the pitch and threw objects at him in anger. He was booked for it, but later apologized. Mark Hughes suggested Adebayor did it to make Manchester City fans love him.
Adebayor, who was voted African Footballer of the Year in 2008, also plays for his native Togo, although he was also eligible to play for Nigeria. He helped Togo qualify for the 2006 African Cup of Nations, scoring 11 goals in the qualifiers! He also played a major role in qualifying for the 2006 World Cup in Togo. Although Adebayor failed to score a single goal in the World Cup and Togo was eliminated during the group stage, he captained the team after qualifying.
This is not the first time Adebayor has gotten into trouble for his impulsiveness and temper. During the 2006 Africa Cup of Nations, he almost left the tournament after an argument with his coach and was once dropped from the team after an argument over the payment of bonuses! But Adebayor was brought back to the national team of Togo in 2007. Adebayor wears the football uniform number 25.
